PART 4 — THE MAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

For several seconds, none of us moved.
The man across the street stood beside the black sedan, staring directly at the house.
Noah’s hand tightened around my arm.
“That’s him,” he whispered again.
“Who is he?”
“I don’t know his name. Mom just called him Mr. Gray.”
The elderly woman suddenly locked the front door.
“Everyone stay away from the windows.”
Her voice had changed.
She was no longer the calm woman who had welcomed me inside.
She looked frightened.
“How long have you known about him?” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she walked to the wooden cabinet and pulled out another envelope.

“I was hoping you’d never have to see this.”
I stared at her.
“What is it?”
“Cara’s final instructions.”
I opened it.
Inside was a single handwritten page.
Daniel, if the man outside has found you, then the truth is finally coming to the surface. Do not run. Do not confront him alone. And most importantly, do not let him take Noah.
My heart pounded.
“Take Noah?”
I looked at the boy.
“What does that mean?”
The elderly woman finally sat down.
“Cara wasn’t hiding Noah from you because she didn’t love you.”
“Then why?”
“Because someone was trying to find him.”
“Who?”
She looked toward the window.

“His biological father.”
I felt my stomach drop.
“But Cara said Noah was my son.”
“He is.”
“Then who is his biological father?”
The woman hesitated.
“That’s what Cara wanted you to discover yourself.”
A loud knock suddenly struck the front door.
Noah jumped.
The man outside had crossed the street.
Another knock.
Harder this time.
“Open the door,” a man’s voice called.
Nobody answered.
Then he spoke again.
“Daniel, I know you’re inside.”
My blood ran cold.
He knew my name.
I moved toward the door, but the elderly woman grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t.”
“How does he know I’m here?”
“Because he’s been waiting for you.”
Another silence.
Then the man said something that made my entire body freeze.
“Cara told me you would come looking for Noah.”
I looked at the letter in my hand.
Cara had known this would happen.
She had planned for it.
But why?
The man continued.
“You deserve to know the truth, Daniel.”
I didn’t answer.
“My name is Adrian.”
The elderly woman closed her eyes.

I noticed the reaction immediately.
“You know him.”
She whispered, “Yes.”
“Who is he?”
Before she could answer, Adrian spoke again.
“I worked with Cara for years.”
My heart raced.
“Worked with her doing what?”
No response.
Then Adrian slipped an envelope underneath the door.
“The truth about the hospital is inside.”
I stared at it.
The elderly woman whispered, “Don’t open it.”
But I picked it up anyway.
Inside was a photocopy of a hospital record.
Fourteen years earlier, Cara had been admitted to St. Mary’s under a different name.
She had given birth to a baby boy.
Noah.
But there was something else.
The father’s name had been deliberately blacked out.
I looked at Adrian through the glass.
“Why was the father’s name removed?”
“Because Cara asked me to remove it.”
“Why?”
“Because she was protecting you.”
I shook my head.
“From what?”
Adrian looked toward Noah.
“From the people who wanted that child.”
My eyes narrowed.
“What people?”
He took a deep breath.
“The kind of people who don’t care how many lives they destroy to get what they want.”
Suddenly, Noah spoke.
“Mom used to say the same thing.”
Everyone turned toward him.
Noah walked slowly toward the door.
“She told me that one day, my father would come for me.”
My throat tightened.
“She told you that?”
He nodded.
“But she said he couldn’t find me until she was gone.”
The room went silent.
Then I remembered Cara’s letter.
Now she has nothing to fear.
For the first time, I understood what those words might mean.
Cara hadn’t married me simply because it was her dying wish.
She had married me because she needed to make me Noah’s legal guardian before she died.
She had known someone would come after him.
And she had trusted me to protect him.
But there was still one question.
Why me?
Adrian seemed to read my thoughts.
“Because Cara knew you would never abandon him.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“She could have told me.”
“She tried.”
“What?”
“Ten years ago.”
I stared at him.
Adrian reached into his coat and pulled out an old photograph.
It showed Cara standing outside my apartment on the night she disappeared.
But I had never seen that photograph before.
“She came to tell you she was pregnant,” Adrian said.
My heart shattered.
“Then why didn’t she?”
“Because someone followed her.”
I looked at the photograph more closely.
There was a second person in the background.
A man standing across the street.
I recognized him.
It was the same man who had just been standing outside the house.
Adrian’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“He has been watching Cara and Noah for fourteen years.”
“Who is he?”
Adrian looked directly at me.
“Your father.”
I couldn’t speak.
My father had died twelve years ago.
At least, that was what I’d always been told.
I slowly turned toward the elderly woman.
She was crying.
“Daniel,” she whispered, “your father isn’t dead.”
My entire world seemed to stop.
Then someone knocked on the door again.
But this time, it wasn’t Adrian.
It was someone standing behind us.
We all turned.
The back door was slowly opening.
And a familiar voice whispered from the darkness:
“Daniel… you should have left Cara’s secrets buried.”……………..
