My hands were shaking so badly that I almost dropped the envelope.
I looked at the woman in black, waiting for her to explain, but she only shook her head.
“Not here,” she whispered. “Cara made me promise.”
“Promise what?”
“Promise that I would give this to you only after she was gone.”
Then she turned and walked away before I could ask another question.
I stood beside Cara’s grave, staring at the envelope like it contained the answer to the ten years that had haunted me.
There was no name on the front.
Only three words written in Cara’s handwriting.
“For You, Daniel.”
My heart stopped.
I hadn’t seen that handwriting in ten years.
I took the envelope home and placed it on the kitchen table.
For almost an hour, I couldn’t bring myself to open it.
Part of me was terrified of what I might find.
Another part of me was terrified that there would be nothing inside.
Finally, I tore it open.
There was a single folded letter.
The first sentence made my entire body go cold.
“Daniel, if you’re reading this, then I finally ran out of time.”
I had to stop reading.
I pressed my hands against my face and tried to breathe.
Then I continued.
“I know you spent years wondering why I left you. I know you probably hated me for it. You deserved an explanation, but I was too afraid to give you one.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“Then tell me now,” I whispered to an empty room.
The next line was even harder to understand.
“The night before I disappeared, someone came to see me.”
I froze.
Someone?
Who?
“They told me that if I stayed with you, you would eventually become part of something you never agreed to.”
My heart began pounding.
I kept reading.
“I was given a choice. Leave you forever, or watch the person I loved most get destroyed because of me.”
I stared at those words for several seconds.
Destroyed?
What could she possibly have meant?
Cara had never mentioned anyone threatening her.
She had never told me she was in danger.
And yet, according to her letter, someone had forced her to choose between losing me and putting my life at risk.
Then I reached the sentence that changed everything.
“Daniel, I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you. I left because I loved you enough to let you hate me.”
I broke down.
For ten years, I had believed she had simply abandoned me.
I had blamed myself for our argument.
I had wondered if she had met someone else.
I had spent countless nights asking what I had done wrong.
And now she was telling me none of it was true.
But there was more.
At the bottom of the page, Cara had written:
“When I came back to you, I knew I was dying. But there was another reason I needed to marry you.”
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Another reason?
I read the final paragraph.
“There is something I never told you. Something I kept hidden for ten years. If you want the truth, don’t trust anyone who tells you they knew me better than you did. And whatever you do, Daniel…”
The sentence ended there.
I turned the page.
Nothing.
The rest of the letter was blank.
I thought it was over.
Then I noticed something strange.
The paper felt thicker than it should.
I held it toward the kitchen light.
There was something hidden inside.
My hands began trembling again.
I carefully pulled apart the two layers of paper.
A small photograph slipped onto the table.
It showed Cara standing beside a little boy.
The boy couldn’t have been more than eight years old.
And on the back of the photograph were six words that made my blood run cold.
“Daniel, he is your son.”
I stared at the photograph, unable to breathe.
Because the boy had my eyes.
And suddenly, the ten years Cara had kept secret weren’t the only thing I needed an explanation for.
There was a child somewhere in the world who had spent his entire life without knowing who his father was.
And Cara had known all along.
But if that boy was really my son…
Who was his mother supposed to be?
And why had Cara waited until her funeral to tell me?……………………….
