PART 4 — THE BABY THEY STOLE

My hands went numb as I stared at the photograph.
Noah was sleeping peacefully in his hospital bassinet, completely unaware that someone had just taken his picture.
Someone was watching him.
Someone had been close enough to stand beside my baby’s bed.
“Detective Harris,” I whispered, “someone is inside this hospital.”
He immediately took the phone from my hand.
“Don’t respond.”
“But they have my son.”
“And that’s exactly why we’re not going to play their game.”
He motioned toward the door.
“Stay here.”
Two officers stepped into the hallway.
Margaret remained beside me, gripping my hand.

Then suddenly, the lights in the hallway flickered.
Noah’s monitor began beeping.
My heart nearly stopped.
“Where’s my baby?”
Margaret rushed toward the door.
A nurse came running from the opposite direction.
“Mrs. Caldwell!”
“What happened?”
“The nursery doors just locked.”
“What?”
She looked terrified.
“The electronic security system was triggered.”
Detective Harris immediately moved toward the nursery.

I tried to get out of bed.
“Noah!”
“Mrs. Caldwell, you can’t walk yet.”
“I don’t care!”
I tore the IV from my hand.
Pain shot through my arm as I stumbled toward the hallway.
Margaret caught me before I fell.
Then we heard a baby crying.
Noah.
I recognized his cry instantly.
Detective Harris forced open the nursery door.
Inside, nurses were frantically checking the bassinets.

One was empty.
My heart shattered.
“NOAH!”
I screamed.
The nurse turned toward me.
“Your baby was here thirty seconds ago!”
“Where is he?”
Nobody answered.
Then Detective Harris spotted something on the floor.
A tiny blue hospital bracelet.
He picked it up.
His face changed.
“What’s wrong?”
He looked at me.
“This isn’t Noah’s bracelet.”
I stared at him.
“What do you mean?”
He turned it over.
There was a name written on the inside.

LUCAS CARTER.
Margaret covered her mouth.
“No…”
Detective Harris immediately called his officers.
“Lock down every exit. Nobody leaves this hospital.”
My legs almost gave out.
“If Lucas’s bracelet was here…”
Margaret finished my sentence.
“Then Ethan’s other baby was here too.”
I looked around the nursery.
There were six bassinets.
Five babies.
One empty space.
But something didn’t make sense.
I walked toward the empty bassinet.
A nurse tried to stop me.
I pointed at the blanket.
“That’s Noah’s blanket.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
I touched it with trembling fingers.
There was a small stain on the edge.
Blood.
My blood.
The same blood type information that had been written on my hospital records.
I suddenly remembered something.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at me.
“When Noah was born, the nurse told me something strange.”
“What?”
“She said there had been a mix-up with the babies’ bracelets.”
Detective Harris stared at me.
“Did she say anything else?”
“She said someone had corrected it before I woke up.”
The room became silent.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
A nurse standing nearby suddenly lowered her head.
Detective Harris noticed.
“You.”
She froze.
“Come here.”
The nurse slowly approached.
“What happened the night Noah was born?”
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“You were working that night.”
“I was only covering another nurse’s shift.”
Detective Harris showed her the photograph of Lucas.
The woman’s face went pale.
“I’ve never seen that baby.”
Margaret suddenly stepped forward.
“I have.”
The nurse looked at her.
Margaret’s voice trembled.
“You were standing beside him.”
The nurse started crying.
“I was told not to say anything.”
My heart pounded.
“Who told you?”
She looked toward the hallway.
“Mr. Caldwell.”
Ethan.
“What did he tell you?”
“He said Olivia’s baby needed to be transferred quietly.”
“Transferred where?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s a lie,” Detective Harris said.
The nurse shook her head desperately.
“I swear! I only followed instructions.”
Then she whispered,
“He gave me an envelope.”
“What was inside?”
“Money.”
My stomach turned.
“How much?”
“Ten thousand dollars.”
“For what?”
“To change a bracelet.”
The room went completely silent.
Detective Harris looked at me.
“Emma, I need you to prepare yourself.”
“For what?”
He pointed toward the hospital records computer.
“We just found the original birth registration.”
My heart raced.
He pulled up the file.
There were two babies registered that night.
One under my name.
One under Olivia’s.
But someone had altered the records afterward.
And beside the alteration was a digital signature.
Ethan Caldwell.
I stared at the screen.
“He changed the records.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Detective Harris looked at the trust document.
“To make everyone believe the child receiving your father’s inheritance was his biological son.”
“But if Noah isn’t Ethan’s son…”
“Then Ethan needed another way to control the inheritance.”
Suddenly, Margaret grabbed my arm.
“Emma.”
“What?”
She was staring at the photograph again.
“The bracelet.”
“What about it?”
“The color.”
I looked down.
Lucas’s bracelet was blue.
Noah’s had always been yellow.
Margaret’s face went white.
“When I saw the babies eight days ago, Lucas had the yellow bracelet.”
I froze.
“What?”
“Yes.”
She pointed at the evidence bag.
“That means the babies were already switched.”
Detective Harris looked at the nurse.
“Where was the baby with the yellow bracelet taken?”
The nurse began sobbing.
“I don’t know.”
“You need to tell us.”
She covered her face.
“I heard Mr. Caldwell talking to Olivia.”
“What did he say?”
“He said the baby would be safe.”
“Where?”
She hesitated.
“An address.”
“What address?”
She finally whispered it.
My blood ran cold.
Because I knew that address.
It was the address of the mountain cabin Ethan had supposedly rented for his birthday weekend.
The same cabin he had driven toward while I was bleeding on our nursery floor.
Detective Harris immediately grabbed his radio.
“Get units to that location.”
I looked at Margaret.
“He took the baby there.”
She nodded.
“But which baby?”
My heart stopped.
If Noah had been switched at birth…
Then the baby Ethan had taken to the mountains might not be Noah’s biological identity at all.
It might be Lucas.
And Ethan’s entire plan could have been built around one horrifying mistake.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Another unknown message.
I opened it.
There was no photograph this time.
Only one sentence:
“You’re getting close, Emma.”
A second message arrived.
“But if the police reach the cabin first, your son dies.”
I looked up at Detective Harris.
He saw my face.
“What did they say?”
I handed him the phone.
He read the message.
Then his expression hardened.
“We’re going.”
Margaret grabbed my hand.
“Emma, you can’t go.”
I shook my head.
“I have to.”
“You’re still recovering.”
“My baby is there.”
Detective Harris looked toward the hallway.
“We’ll bring him home.”
I stared through the hospital window into the darkness outside.
For eight days, I had believed I was fighting to protect my newborn son.
Now I realized I had been fighting against something much bigger.
A stolen identity.
A hidden child.
A fortune worth millions.
And a husband who had left me bleeding because he believed he could finally erase the evidence.
But as Detective Harris rushed out to mobilize his team, my phone buzzed one final time.
This time, the message wasn’t from an unknown number.
It was from Ethan.
“Emma, if you want to know who Noah really belongs to, look inside your father’s old house.”
Then another message appeared.
“And whatever you do… don’t trust my mother.”
I slowly looked at Margaret.
She was standing beside me.
Her face was covered in tears.
But when she saw Ethan’s message, she stopped crying.
Because she knew exactly what was inside my father’s old house.
And suddenly, she whispered,
“He found it.”…………………….
