PART 4 — THE LETTER HE NEVER WANTED ME TO READ

I held the envelope in both hands, but I couldn’t bring myself to open it.
For thirty-eight years, I had believed I knew my husband.
I knew how he took his coffee.
I knew the songs he hummed while shaving.
I knew the way he squeezed my hand whenever he was worried.
But now, standing inside a house in Malta, I was discovering that the man I loved had carried an entire secret life inside his heart.
A life I had never known existed.
“Open it,” David whispered.
I looked at him.
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
His answer stunned me.
David swallowed hard.
“You should trust the truth.”
I slowly tore open the envelope.
Inside was a single handwritten letter.
The handwriting was unmistakably my husband’s.
My hands began shaking as I read.

My dearest Margaret,
If you’re reading this, then I’m no longer there to explain. I’m sorry.
I had to stop.
My eyes filled with tears.
David stood silently across from me while Sarah turned away.
I continued.
Twenty-nine years ago, I met David and his wife, Anna, under circumstances I never told you about. Anna was seriously ill, and she needed an operation that she couldn’t afford. I helped her.
I looked at David.
He lowered his head.
But helping Anna wasn’t the only reason I became involved. I discovered that someone was trying to take this house from her. Someone she trusted. Someone who had access to her finances and legal documents.
I felt a chill run through me.
I promised Anna I would protect the house until the truth came out. But before we could expose that person, she became too sick.
I looked at Sarah.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
Then I read the next line.
Anna made me promise that if anything happened to her, the house would eventually belong to Margaret.
My breath caught.
“Why me?” I whispered.
David finally spoke.
“Because Anna believed you were the only person she could trust.”

I looked back at the letter.
Margaret, you may wonder why Anna chose you. She had never met you. But she knew something about you that I didn’t understand until much later.
I turned the page.
Years before, Anna discovered that the person stealing from her family was connected to someone in my own business. She believed the money being taken was eventually being used to destroy our family. She needed someone completely outside that circle. Someone with no connection to the people involved.
I looked up.
“Who was stealing from her?”
David’s face became pale.
“I think you already know.”
“No,” I whispered.
David pointed toward the folder.
“Look at the bank records.”
I opened them again.
There were transactions going back nearly three decades.
Large amounts of money had disappeared.
But then I noticed something.
The account receiving the money had my husband’s name attached to it.

I stared at David.
“My husband stole from her?”
“No,” he said quickly. “He was investigating the theft.”
“Then why is his name on these accounts?”
“Because he put them there deliberately.”
I couldn’t breathe.
My husband had created false accounts to trace where the money was going.
And he had been doing it for years.
Then I noticed another name appearing repeatedly in the records.
A name I recognized.
A name that made my stomach turn.
It belonged to a man who had been my husband’s business partner.
A man who had attended our home for family dinners.
A man my husband had trusted for decades.
But there was something even worse.
The final transaction had happened only three weeks before my husband died.

I looked at David.
“Why didn’t you tell me this before?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because your husband made me promise not to.”
“What else did he make you promise?”
David hesitated.
Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out an old photograph.
It showed my husband, David, Anna, and another man standing together outside the house.
I stared at the fourth man.
My blood ran cold.
It was the same man whose name appeared in the financial records.
But there was something written on the back of the photograph.
I turned it over.
“If anything happens to me, protect Margaret from him.”
I dropped the photograph.
For years, I had believed my husband died peacefully after his illness.
Now I wondered whether his death had been as innocent as everyone told me.
Then Sarah suddenly gasped.
“Dad…”
David turned.
“What?”
She pointed toward the window.
“There.”
A black car was parked across the street.
Someone was sitting inside.
Watching the house.
David immediately stood.
“Margaret, get away from the window.”
My heart began racing.
“Who is that?”
David didn’t answer.
The car started moving.
Then it stopped directly in front of the house.
A man stepped out.
David’s face turned completely white.
“He found us.”
“Who?”
David looked at me.
“The man your husband was trying to expose.”
There was a knock at the door.
Three slow knocks.
Then silence.
Another three knocks.
Sarah grabbed my hand.
“Don’t open it.”
But then something slid underneath the door.
A photograph.
I picked it up.
It showed me standing beside David at the harbor just two days earlier.
Someone had been watching us.
On the back, written in black ink, were seven words:
“Your husband died because he knew too much.”
My knees nearly gave way.
Then the door handle began to turn.
And David whispered the words I had been terrified to hear:
“Margaret… your husband didn’t die naturally.”………………..
