sound.
A baby crying somewhere behind a curtain.
Then another cry.
Almost at the same time.
I had asked the nurse whether another woman had delivered beside me.
He slid it toward me.
Slowly, I turned it over.
The photograph was old.
Eighteen years old, judging by the date printed in the corner.
It showed Claire—Ben’s mother—standing outside a hospital.
She looked younger, exhausted, but happy.
In her arms was a newborn wrapped in a blue blanket.
Nothing unusual about that.
Until I noticed the woman standing beside her.
Me.
I stopped breathing.
I was in a wheelchair.
My hair was messy.
My hospital bracelet was still around my wrist.
And in my arms was Luke.
Two mothers.
Two babies.
Same hospital.
Same day.
I stared at the photograph until the faces blurred.
“I’ve never seen this picture.”
“Ben hadn’t either.”
“Who took it?”
“We don’t know.”
“Why does Claire have it?”
“We don’t know that either.”
I turned the photo over.
There was handwriting on the back.
Four words.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My husband’s.
Daniel had been dead for three years.
But I would have recognized those crooked capital letters anywhere.
DON’T EVER TELL HER.
My stomach twisted.
Luke leaned forward.
“That’s Dad’s handwriting, isn’t it?”
I couldn’t lie.
“Yes.”
He closed his eyes.
That one word seemed to destroy whatever hope he had left.
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
“This doesn’t make sense.”
“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you.”
“Your father would never—”
“Mom, Dad knew.”
“We don’t know that.”
“He wrote it on the picture!”
“We don’t know what he meant!”
“Then what did he mean?”
“I DON’T KNOW!”
Silence.
The refrigerator hummed behind us.
A car passed outside.
Then Luke whispered, “That’s why I moved in with Ben.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“Ben found these about a week ago.”
“Why didn’t he come to me?”
“Because he wanted proof first.”
“Proof of what?”
Luke looked toward the photograph.
“That we’re brothers.”
I felt something inside me crack.
“Luke…”
“He ordered DNA tests.”
I couldn’t speak.
“He didn’t tell me at first. He took a cup I’d used when I was at his house.”
My stomach dropped.
“He did what?”
“I was furious when he told me.”
“He had no right.”
“I know.”
“But?”
Luke’s eyes filled again.
“But the results came yesterday.”
I gripped the table.
“What did they say?”
Luke swallowed.
“Ben and I share enough DNA to be full biological brothers.”
The room tilted.
I stared at him.
“No.”
“Ninety-nine percent probability.”
“No.”
“I saw the report.”
“No.”
“Mom.”
“NO.”
I stood so quickly the chair fell backward.
Luke jumped.
I walked to the sink and gripped the counter.
My reflection stared back at me from the dark kitchen window.
Eighteen years.
Birthday parties.
School plays.
Christmas mornings.
Daniel coaching baseball.
Claire bringing Ben over for sleepovers.
Two boys growing up practically inseparable.
Two boys everyone joked looked like twins.
And none of us ever questioned it.
Or maybe someone had.
Maybe Daniel had known the entire time.
A terrible thought struck me.
I turned around.
“Where is Ben now?”
Luke hesitated.
“At the apartment.”
“Does Claire know about the DNA test?”
“No.”
“Does she know you found these papers?”
“No.”
“Then we need to talk to her.”
Luke’s face went pale.
“That’s what I thought too.”
“What do you mean?”
“There’s something I haven’t told you.”
My heart sank.
“What now?”
“When I moved in, Ben and I planned to confront her together.”
“And?”
“We didn’t get the chance.”
“Why?”
“Because yesterday morning, she came to the apartment.”
I waited.
“She knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That we’d found the papers.”
A chill ran through me.
“What did she say?”
Luke looked toward the locked kitchen door.
“She told Ben to pack a bag.”
“Why?”
“She said we had opened something that should have stayed buried.”
My skin prickled.
“Where is Claire now?”
“We don’t know.”
“What do you mean, you don’t know?”
“She left.”
“Left where?”
“Nobody knows.”
I reached for my phone.
“I’m calling her.”
Luke grabbed my wrist.
“Don’t.”
“Luke, let go.”
“Mom, please.”
“Why shouldn’t I call her?”
“Because she left something for you.”
I slowly lowered the phone.
“For me?”
Luke nodded.
“That’s the real reason I came home.”
He reached inside his jacket for the third time.
But this time, what he removed wasn’t a photograph.
It wasn’t a hospital record.
It was a sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front.
SARAH.
I recognized Claire’s handwriting.
Underneath my name were three words.
I’M SO SORRY.
My hands went numb.
“When did she give you this?”
“She didn’t.”
“Then where did you get it?”
“Ben found it taped underneath his mother’s kitchen table after she disappeared.”
I stared at the envelope.
“Have you read it?”
“No.”
“Has Ben?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because it’s addressed to you.”
I took it.
The envelope felt strangely heavy.
There was more than a letter inside.
Something hard.
Something small.
Luke stood beside me as I tore open the seal.
A brass key fell onto the table.
Then a folded sheet of paper.
I opened it.
Claire had written only six lines.
Sarah,
If you’re reading this, the boys discovered the truth.
Daniel made me promise I would never tell you.
I kept that promise because I thought it protected both families.
I was wrong.
Before you decide what to tell Luke, go to the place where Daniel kept what he couldn’t destroy.
At the bottom was an address.
I knew it immediately.
It belonged to a storage facility twenty minutes outside town.
But that wasn’t what made my blood turn cold.
Daniel had rented a storage unit there for years.
He told me it contained old business records.
After he died, I tried to clear it out.
The facility manager told me the unit had already been emptied.
I looked at the brass key.
Stamped into it was a number.
214.
“Mom,” Luke whispered, “what is it?”
I couldn’t answer.
Because suddenly I remembered something Daniel had said three nights before he died.
We were lying in bed when he took my hand and whispered:
“If Luke ever learns what happened the night he was born, don’t hate me until you know why I did it.”
At the time, Daniel was heavily medicated.
I thought he was confused.
I kissed his forehead and told him to sleep.
Now, eighteen years after Luke’s birth and three years after Daniel’s death, I finally understood.
My husband hadn’t been confused at all.
He had been trying to confess.
Luke picked up the key.
“What’s in Unit 214?”
I looked at my son.
“I don’t know.”
Then my phone rang.
Both of us jumped.
The screen showed a number I hadn’t seen in years.
I stared at it, unable to move.
Luke looked at me.
“Who is it?”
My throat tightened.
“Ben’s mother.”
I answered.
“Claire?”
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then Claire whispered:
“Sarah, listen carefully. Don’t go to that storage unit with Luke.”
I looked at my son.
“Why?”
Claire began crying.
“Because Luke isn’t the child Daniel was trying to protect.”
My blood ran cold.
“What are you talking about?”
There was a long silence.
Then she said the sentence that made me grip the table to keep from falling.
“He was protecting Ben from you.”
And the call went dead.
TO BE CONTINUED……………………….

Click Here to continuous Read Full Ending Story👉:PART 3 — UNIT 214

The paper trembled between my fingers.
