Open the gate.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\nHis expression changed immediately.<br \/>\nThat one word seemed to shock him more than anything I had said in years.<br \/>\nMaybe because I had spent my entire life saying yes.<br \/>\nYes, I\u2019ll babysit.<br \/>\nYes, I\u2019ll loan you the money.<br \/>\nYes, I\u2019ll change my plans.<br \/>\nYes, I\u2019ll help.<br \/>\nYes, I understand.<br \/>\nNo apparently sounded foreign coming from their mother.<br \/>\nChloe stepped closer.<br \/>\n\u201cMom, we\u2019re worried about you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThree months is a long time to be worried silently.\u201d<br \/>\nHer eyes dropped.<br \/>\nJessica didn\u2019t even flinch.<br \/>\n\u201cWe agreed to give you space because that\u2019s what you seemed to want.\u201d<br \/>\nI actually laughed.<br \/>\n\u201cYou asked me to stop calling.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat isn\u2019t what we meant.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt is exactly what you meant.\u201d<br \/>\nBrandon slapped his palm against the gate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we stop doing this through a camera? I went to the hospital. \/>\n\u201cAnd then we can explain to the judge why the three people seeking control over my assets arrived at my house carrying documents prepared with assistance from a financial advisor who is currently being audited over suspicious transfers from my trust.\u201d<br \/>\nJessica\u2019s face went completely white.<br \/>\nBrandon stepped backward.<br \/>\nBut Chloe did something different.<br \/>\nShe started crying.<br \/>\nNot loud, theatrical tears.<br \/>\nReal ones.<br \/>\nShe covered her mouth and turned away from her siblings.<br \/>\n\u201cChloe?\u201d I said.<br \/>\nJessica grabbed her arm.<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<br \/>\nChloe pulled away.<br \/>\n\u201cI can\u2019t do this.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cStop talking,\u201d Brandon snapped.<br \/>\nThat residence after the owner explicitly told you not to come, attempted to gain access using an invalid code, refused to leave when asked, and brought documents intended to gain control over the owner\u2019s property.\u201d<br \/>\nBrandon slowly lowered his phone.<br \/>\nJessica shoved the papers back into the folder.<br \/>\n\u201cFine.\u201d<br \/>\nShe turned toward the cars.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re leaving.\u201d<br \/>\nBut Chloe didn\u2019t move.<br \/>\n\u201cChloe,\u201d Jessica hissed.<br \/>\nMy youngest daughter stood frozen beside the gate.<br \/>\nThen she looked isn\u2019t the only signature they\u2019ve been using.\u201d<br \/>\nI stared at her.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<br \/>\nChloe bent down, picked up the folder, and held it tightly against her chest.<br \/>\n\u201cThere are documents in here you need to see.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat documents?\u201d<br \/>\nShe swallowed.<br \/>\n\u201cDocuments you supposedly signed months
