MALCOLM KNEW ABOUT THEM.<br \/>\nI read it twice.<br \/>\nThen a third time.<br \/>\nMy knees nearly gave way.<br \/>\nMalcolm had been dead for 10 years.<br \/>\nI turned the card over again.<br \/>\nAt the bottom was one more line I hadn\u2019t noticed.<br \/>\nASK PETER WHAT HE FOUND IN HIS FATHER\u2019S SAFE.<br \/>\nI pressed the phone harder against my ear.<br \/>\n\u201cPeter.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhen you cleaned out your father\u2019s office after he died\u2026\u201d<br \/>\nI could barely finish the sentence.<br \/>\n\u201cDid you find a safe?\u201d<br \/>\nNothing.<br \/>\n\u201cPeter?\u201d<br \/>\nHis silence told me more than any answer could.<br \/>\nFinally, my son whispered, \u201cMom, there\u2019s something I should have told you years ago.\u201d<br \/>\nI closed my eyes.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDad left a second set of company records.\u201d<br \/>\nMy hand tightened around the card.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat records?\u201d<br \/>\nPeter took a breath.<br \/>\n\u201cI never understood them until Halcyon made the offer.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd now?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNow I think Dad knew someone would eventually try to buy Easton.\u201d<br \/>\nMy heart pounded.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause 11 years ago, Dad purchased something without telling either of us.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did he purchase?\u201d<br \/>\nPeter lowered his voice.<br \/>\n\u201cNot property.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen what?\u201d<br \/>\nThere was a knock in the background on his end of the call.<br \/>\nPeter suddenly stopped speaking.<br \/>\n\u201cPeter?\u201d<br \/>\nNo answer.<br \/>\nThen I heard a man\u2019s voice behind him.<br \/>\nCalm.<br \/>\nClose.<br \/>\n\u201cMr. Bellamy, we really need your mother\u2019s signature tonight.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cPeter, put me on speaker.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNow.\u201d<br \/>\nA click.<br \/>\nI spoke clearly.<br \/>\n\u201cMr. Vale?\u201d<br \/>\nA pause.<br \/>\nThen a smooth voice answered.<br \/>\n\u201cMrs. Bellamy. I\u2019ve been hoping we could speak.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou have until midnight, correct?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s right.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at the clock.<br \/>\n9:23.<br \/>\nMore than 2 and a half hours.<br \/>\n\u201cGood.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cGood?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\nI slipped Charles Wexler\u2019s card into my purse.<br \/>\n\u201cBecause I\u2019m going to use every minute.\u201d<br \/>\nI ended the call.<br \/>\nCeleste stared at me.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<br \/>\nI looked through the lobby.<br \/>\nA tall man in a gray suit was waiting beside the front desk.<br \/>\nCharles Wexler.<br \/>\nA lawyer I had never met.<br \/>\nA man claiming my dead husband knew something about Halcyon.<br \/>\nI started walking toward him.<br \/>\n\u201cRuth?\u201d<br \/>\nI stopped.<br \/>\nCeleste stood behind me.<br \/>\nFor once, there was no smirk on her face.<br \/>\nNo superiority.<br \/>\nOnly fear.<br \/>\n\u201cYou need to know one more thing,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\nShe glanced toward the ballroom before whispering, \u201cLauren told me Halcyon doesn\u2019t actually need you to sell the whole company.\u201d<br \/>\nI stared at her.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIf they get control of one specific thing Malcolm purchased, they can force the Easton property into redevelopment anyway.\u201d<br \/>\nMy blood went cold.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat thing?\u201d<br \/>\nCeleste shook her head.<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<br \/>\nBut Charles Wexler apparently did.<br \/>\nI crossed the lobby.<br \/>\nHe rose when he saw me.<br \/>\n\u201cMrs. Bellamy?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\nHe extended his hand.<br \/>\n\u201cMy name is Charles Wexler.
