{"id":7693,"date":"2026-10-02T09:12:34","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T09:12:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/echostoryus.com\/?p=7693"},"modified":"2026-10-02T09:12:36","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T09:12:36","slug":"part-3-the-document-with-my-forged-signature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/echostoryus.com\/?p=7693","title":{"rendered":"PART 3 \u2014 THE DOCUMENT WITH MY FORGED SIGNATURE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The three words across the top were:<br \/>\nCONSENT TO RELOCATION.<br \/>\nFor a few seconds, I couldn\u2019t breathe.<br \/>\nI zoomed in on the photograph Rick had sent.<br \/>\nMy full name was printed beneath the title.<br \/>\nLaura\u2019s name was beside mine.<br \/>\nAnd at the bottom of the second page was a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.<br \/>\nAlmost.<br \/>\nWhoever had copied it had gotten the long stroke on the H right.<br \/>\nThey had copied the strange way I crossed my double r.<br \/>\nThey had even reproduced the little upward curve I usually made at the end.<br \/>\nBut I knew my own signature.<br \/>\nI had never signed that document.<br \/>\nAnd then I saw the date.<br \/>\nSix weeks earlier.<br \/>\nMy hands went cold.<br \/>\nAccording to the paper, I had supposedly agreed that Laura could relocate with Rick and Noah to another state.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of miles away.<br \/>\nI read the paragraph beneath my forged signature twice.<br \/>\nIt stated that I had been informed of the proposed move and had voluntarily agreed that relocating the children was in their best interests.<br \/>\nThat explained Laura\u2019s message.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s something about the children you don\u2019t know.<br \/>\nShe wasn\u2019t threatening to stop one weekend anymore.<br \/>\nShe was planning to take them away.<br \/>\nMy phone rang.<br \/>\nLaura.<br \/>\nI answered.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere are my children?\u201d<br \/>\nShe didn\u2019t respond to the question.<br \/>\nInstead, she said, \u201cWhat did Rick send you?\u201d<br \/>\nHer voice was different now.<br \/>\nNo arrogance.<br \/>\nNo laughter.<br \/>\nFear.<br \/>\n\u201cPut Rick on the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me what he sent you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cLaura.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did he send you?\u201d<br \/>\nI stared at the photograph.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy is my signature on a document I\u2019ve never seen?\u201d<br \/>\nSilence.<br \/>\nThen she laughed.<br \/>\nIt was forced.<br \/>\n\u201cYou probably signed it and forgot.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou sign paperwork all the time at your shop.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNot paperwork giving you permission to move my sons hundreds of miles away.\u201d<br \/>\nAnother pause.<br \/>\nThen Brent\u2019s voice came faintly through the background.<br \/>\n\u201cHang up.\u201d<br \/>\nI heard Laura cover the phone.<br \/>\nThey whispered to each other.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t understand everything.<br \/>\nBut I heard one sentence clearly.<br \/>\nBrent said:<br \/>\n\u201cHe wasn\u2019t supposed to see that.\u201d<br \/>\nMy entire body went still.<br \/>\n\u201cLaura.\u201d<br \/>\nThe whispering stopped.<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019re on speaker,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nSilence.<br \/>\n\u201cPut my sons on the phone.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019ll see them when I decide you can.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cPut them on the phone.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou started this when you filed against me.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo. You started this when you decided our children were something you could use to control me.\u201d<br \/>\nShe hung up.<br \/>\nI immediately called my attorney.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She answered on the third ring.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI think someone forged my signature.\u201d<br \/>\nThat got her attention.<br \/>\n\u201cOn what?\u201d<br \/>\nI forwarded Rick\u2019s photograph.<br \/>\nFor the next minute, neither of us spoke.<br \/>\nThen she said, \u201cWhere did you get this?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cRick found it in Brent\u2019s office.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDo you have the original?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDo not confront them in person. Do not go to their house. Preserve the photo and every message exactly as received.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI need to get my boys.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI understand. But don\u2019t give Laura an opportunity to claim you acted recklessly. We do this carefully.\u201d<br \/>\nI paced across my kitchen.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does this document mean?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt appears to concern relocation, but a photograph doesn\u2019t tell us whether it was ever submitted anywhere, whether there are additional pages, or what process was followed. We verify first.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd if somebody actually submitted it?\u201d<br \/>\nHer voice became quiet.<br \/>\n\u201cThen we deal with that based on what the records show.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at Rick\u2019s photograph again.<br \/>\nSomething bothered me.<br \/>\nThe document was sitting on Brent\u2019s desk beside a blue folder.<br \/>\nAt the edge of the image, another sheet was partially visible underneath.<br \/>\nI zoomed in.<br \/>\nThere was a date.<br \/>\nTomorrow.<br \/>\nAnd beneath it, I could make out two words:<br \/>\nONE-WAY.<br \/>\nMy stomach dropped.<br \/>\n\u201cThey\u2019re leaving.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThere\u2019s another paper in the photo. I think it\u2019s travel information.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHow certain are you?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m not. But Rick said Laura told them they might have to leave.\u201d<br \/>\nMy attorney paused.<br \/>\n\u201cSend me the original image file. How did you get here?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI ran to Mr. Patterson\u2019s house. He called Grandma, and Grandma brought me.\u201d<br \/>\nOnly then did I notice my mother\u2019s car parked at the curb.<br \/>\nShe stepped out, looking terrified.<br \/>\n\u201cI called you six times,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nI checked my phone.<br \/>\nI had been speaking with my attorney and hadn\u2019t noticed.<br \/>\nMy mother came inside and locked the door.<br \/>\n\u201cRick told me Laura and Brent were packing suitcases.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at my son.<br \/>\n\u201cTell me exactly what happened.\u201d<br \/>\nHe wiped his face.<br \/>\n\u201cMom took my phone. She kept asking what I sent you. Brent was yelling. Then Mom told us to get dressed because we were leaving tonight.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cTonight?\u201d<br \/>\nRick nodded.<br \/>\n\u201cNoah started crying because he wanted to call you. Mom told him no.\u201d<br \/>\nMy chest tightened.<br \/>\n\u201cThen what?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBrent went outside to put bags in the car. Mom was upstairs with Noah. I went through the back door.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou walked to Mr. Patterson\u2019s?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI ran.\u201d<br \/>\nI pulled him into my arms.<br \/>\n\u201cYou did the right thing going to a trusted adult.\u201d<br \/>\nThen he whispered something against my shoulder.<br \/>\n\u201cDad, there\u2019s more.\u201d<br \/>\nI leaned back.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat paper wasn\u2019t the only thing in Brent\u2019s office.\u201d<br \/>\nMy mother and I exchanged glances.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat else did you see?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cA folder with your shop\u2019s name on it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMy shop?\u201d<br \/>\nRick nodded.<br \/>\n\u201cAnd pictures.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat kind of pictures?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cPictures of your building. Your truck. The back door.\u201d<br \/>\nA chill moved down my spine.<br \/>\n\u201cAnything else?\u201d<br \/>\nHe thought for a moment.<br \/>\n\u201cThere was a paper with numbers. A really big number.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHow big?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know. It had lots of zeros.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid you take another picture?\u201d<br \/>\nHe shook his head.<br \/>\n\u201cMom came in.\u201d<br \/>\nI stood slowly.<br \/>\nThe forged relocation document was bad enough.<br \/>\nBut why did Brent have photographs of my repair shop?<br \/>\nBefore I could think further, my phone rang.<br \/>\nMy attorney.<br \/>\nI answered immediately.<br \/>\n\u201cI need you to listen carefully,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cRick is with me.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe ran to a neighbor. My mother brought him here. Noah is still with Laura.\u201d<br \/>\nHer tone changed instantly.<br \/>\n\u201cIs Rick safe?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cStay where you are. I\u2019m going to tell you the next steps based on the situation and the local process. Don\u2019t go chasing Laura yourself.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOkay.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd I found something.\u201d<br \/>\nI tightened my grip on the phone.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe document Rick photographed appears connected to a larger packet.\u201d<br \/>\nMy stomach turned.<br \/>\n\u201cWas it filed?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m still verifying exactly what exists and what has legal effect. But there\u2019s another issue.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat issue?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe contact information associated with the paperwork.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt isn\u2019t yours.\u201d<br \/>\nI frowned.<br \/>\n\u201cThen whose is it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know yet. But someone appears to have been receiving communications intended for you.\u201d<br \/>\nI sat down.<br \/>\nThat changed everything.<br \/>\nIf true, this wasn\u2019t just someone copying my signature.<br \/>\nSomeone may have created a way to keep me from knowing what was happening.<br \/>\nMy attorney continued.<br \/>\n\u201cThere\u2019s something else. I want to be precise because we don\u2019t have the full record yet.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe relocation paperwork may not be the beginning of this.\u201d<br \/>\nMy throat tightened.<br \/>\n\u201cHow far back does it go?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAt least several months based on what I can currently see.\u201d<br \/>\nSeveral months.<br \/>\nLong before the Mercedes.<br \/>\nLong before the $7,018 bill.<br \/>\nLong before I had finally started fighting back.<br \/>\nI looked at Rick.<br \/>\nHe was sitting beside my mother, gripping his backpack with both hands.<br \/>\nThis hadn\u2019t started because of the car.<br \/>\nThe car had only exposed it.<br \/>\nThen headlights swept across my living-room wall.<br \/>\nA vehicle stopped outside.<br \/>\nMy mother stood.<br \/>\n\u201cAre you expecting someone?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\nI moved toward the window but stayed back from the glass.<br \/>\nA dark SUV was parked at the curb.<br \/>\nFor one terrifying second, I thought Laura had found Rick.<br \/>\nThen the driver\u2019s door opened.<br \/>\nMr. Patterson stepped out.<br \/>\nThe neighbor Rick had run to.<br \/>\nHe was carrying something.<br \/>\nA blue folder.<br \/>\nThe same color as the folder in Rick\u2019s photograph.<br \/>\nI opened the door.<br \/>\nMr. Patterson hurried toward me.<br \/>\n\u201cYou need to see this.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhere did you get it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYour boy dropped it in my yard when he came running over.\u201d<br \/>\nRick\u2019s eyes widened.<br \/>\n\u201cI didn\u2019t know I took it.\u201d<br \/>\nApparently, when he grabbed his backpack from Brent\u2019s office, the folder had gotten mixed in with his school papers.<br \/>\nMr. Patterson handed it to me.<br \/>\nIt was thick.<br \/>\nMuch thicker than I expected.<br \/>\nAcross the front, written in black marker, were the words:<br \/>\nHARRIS \u2014 PHASE TWO.<br \/>\nMy attorney was still on the phone.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat\u2019s happening?\u201d she asked.<br \/>\n\u201cI have the folder.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat folder?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe one from Brent\u2019s office.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDo not alter anything.
