Just never enough pieces for anyone to see the whole picture.”
Danny stepped between us.
“Don’t listen to him.”
Thomas laughed softly.
“Still protecting her, Danny?”
“Leave.”
“You disappeared once because people told you to. Don’t make the same mistake twice.”
Danny’s hands curled into fists.

I grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“No more people speaking for me,” I said. “Not you. Not Margaret. Not him.”
Then I turned toward Thomas.
“You have five minutes.”
“Evelyn—” Margaret started.
“Five minutes.”
Thomas nodded.
“My father met Rose in 1952.”
He glanced at the photograph.
“Walter was married.”
My stomach tightened.
“To whom?”
“My mother.”
Of course.
Thomas continued.
“Rose worked as a bookkeeper at a construction company Walter partly owned. They had an affair.”
“So Walter was my father.”
“Possibly.”
“Possibly?”
Thomas looked toward Margaret.

“Tell her.”
Margaret shook her head.
“Thomas, don’t.”
“Tell me what?”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Rose wasn’t sure.”
My stomach dropped.
“Wasn’t sure about what?”
“Who your father was.”
I felt Danny’s hand move toward mine.
This time, I took it.
Margaret continued.
“Rose had been seeing Walter. But around the same time…”
She looked away.
“She was also involved with someone else.”
“Who?”
“Robert.”
I couldn’t speak.
“My father?”
“The man who raised you,” Thomas corrected.

I stared at Margaret.
“Robert and Rose?”
Margaret nodded.
“Before Robert married Mother.”
Everything I believed about my childhood seemed to be collapsing piece by piece.
“Then Robert could have been my biological father.”
“Yes.”
“Did he know?”
“He suspected.”
“Did Mother know?”
“Eventually.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Apparently everyone knew except me.”
Thomas stepped farther into the room.
“Walter wanted Rose to disappear.”
“Why?”
“Because my father had political ambitions. An affair was inconvenient. An illegitimate child was worse.”
“So he killed her?”
Thomas’s expression hardened.
“No.”
“Margaret said Rose didn’t die in an accident.”
“She didn’t.”
“Then what happened?”
Thomas reached into his coat.
Danny moved immediately.
“Slowly.”
Thomas stopped.
“I’m taking out a letter.”
He produced a yellowed envelope and placed it on the dresser.
“Rose wrote this three days before the supposed accident.”
I picked it up.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
Dear Robert,
Walter knows I’m leaving. He knows I copied the records. If anything happens to me, take Evelyn and go. Do not trust anyone from the Hayes family.
My hands began shaking.
“What records?”
Thomas answered.
“My father and several business partners were stealing money through government contracts.”
“How much?”
“Enough to send powerful men to prison.”
“And Rose discovered it because she kept the books.”
“Exactly.”
“Then why are you here?”
Thomas’s smile disappeared.
“Because those records were never found.”
I stared at him.
“That’s what this is about?”
“It started that way.”
Margaret laughed bitterly.
“Don’t believe him. His family has spent decades looking for those papers.”
Thomas turned toward her.
“And your family spent decades blackmailing mine with the possibility that they still existed.”
“What?”
Margaret’s face went pale.
“Stop.”
“No,” I said. “Let him finish.”
Thomas looked at me.
“Your mother knew Rose had copied financial records. After Rose disappeared, she convinced my father that Robert had them.”
“Did he?”
“No one knew.”
“So Walter threatened my family.”
“Yes.”
“And that’s why they kept Danny away?”
Thomas glanced at Danny.
“Partly.”
There was that word again.
Partly.
Every answer opened another door.
“What else happened?”
Danny finally spoke.
“Walter Hayes was the man who met me after Margaret’s second visit.”
I turned toward him.
“You met Walter?”
“Once.”
“When?”
“1981.”
“What did he want?”
“He wanted me to forget you existed.”
“Why would he care about us?”
Danny looked at Thomas.
“Because Walter thought Evelyn knew where Rose’s documents were.”
“But I didn’t even know Rose existed.”
“He didn’t believe that.”
Thomas nodded.
“My father was paranoid by then.”
Danny continued.
“Walter told me if I contacted you again, he’d make sure something happened to you.”
My throat tightened.
“And you believed him.”
“I’d already been followed. My motel had been broken into. Your father had begged me to stay away. Margaret kept appearing whenever I tried to contact you.”
He squeezed my hand.
“I thought disappearing was the only way to keep you safe.”
I pulled my hand away.
“But nobody ever gave me a choice.”
Danny lowered his eyes.
“No.”
“You all decided what my life should be.”
“I know.”
“I spent fifty-five years believing you were dead.”
His voice cracked.
“I know.”
I wanted to be angry at him.
Part of me was.
But when I looked at the old man standing before me, I also saw the nineteen-year-old boy who had survived a war, captivity, threats, and decades of guilt.
Thomas interrupted.
“There’s still something none of you understand.”
Margaret looked at him sharply.
“Don’t.”
“Rose didn’t die in 1954.”
“We know that,” I said.
“No. You know the date was false. You don’t know why.”
He walked toward the bed.
“Rose staged her death.”
Silence.
“What?”
“The car accident was staged.”
“Why?”
“To escape Walter.”
My knees weakened.
“Then where did she go?”
“Robert helped her.”
I looked at Margaret.
She was crying again.
“That’s how Margaret was born three years later,” I whispered.
Margaret nodded.
“Rose lived under another name.”
“For how long?”
“Decades.”
“And you knew?”
Margaret wiped her face.
“I found out when I was sixteen.”
The same age she’d been when Danny’s letters started disappearing.
Suddenly, pieces began connecting.
“Mother told you.”
“Yes.”
“She made you help her.”
“At first.”
“At first?”
Margaret looked ashamed.
“Later, I chose to.”
“Why?”
“Because Walter found us.”
My skin prickled.
“He came to our house?”
“Not personally. He sent someone.”
“Who?”
“Thomas.”
Everyone turned toward him.
Thomas didn’t deny it.
“I was twenty-three,” he said.
“My father told me Rose had stolen something that belonged to our family.”
“You threatened a sixteen-year-old girl?”
“I didn’t know the truth then.”
Margaret laughed.
“You knew enough.”
“I knew what my father told me.”
“And what was that?”
“That Rose was dangerous.”
I shook my head.
“Every person in this story seems to have done terrible things because someone else told them it was necessary.”
Nobody answered.
I walked toward Margaret.
“Why did you take Danny’s letters?”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Mother made me at first.”
“And later?”
“I kept doing it.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought if Danny came back, you’d start asking questions. You’d learn Rose existed. And Walter would know we’d told you.”
“You stole fifty-five years from me.”
“I know.”
“You watched me sit alone every Christmas.”
“I know.”
“You watched me refuse every man who ever asked me out.”
Margaret began sobbing.
“I know.”
“You watched me grow old waiting for a dead man who wasn’t dead.”
“I thought I was keeping you alive!”
Her shout filled the room.
I stared at her.
Margaret covered her face.
“When Walter found out Danny had survived, he told Mother that if Danny came home and started digging into the past, he’d finish what he’d started.”
“What he’d started?”
Margaret froze.
Thomas looked away.
I caught it.
“What does that mean?”
No one answered.
“What did Walter start?”
Margaret whispered, “The accident.”
“But you said Rose staged it.”
“Not that accident.”
My blood went cold.
“What accident?”
Margaret looked at me.
“The one that killed Robert.”
My father had died when I was in my forties.
A highway collision.
A truck had crossed the center line.
At least that’s what I’d been told.
“You’re saying Robert was murdered?”
“I don’t know,” Margaret whispered. “But before he died, he told me Walter had found him.”
I turned toward Thomas.
“Is that true?”
Thomas said nothing.
“IS THAT TRUE?”
“My father was capable of terrible things.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“No,” Thomas said quietly. “It isn’t.”
I suddenly understood why Thomas had come tonight.
He hadn’t come to reveal the truth.
He wanted something.
“The documents.”
Thomas looked at me.
“You think I have them.”
“I think Rose gave them to someone.”
“I’ve never even met Rose.”
Thomas stared at me strangely.
Then he said something I wasn’t expecting.
“Yes, you have.”
I stopped.
“What?”
“You met her many times.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Think, Evelyn.”
“I would remember my own mother.”
“Not if you didn’t know who she was.”
He reached into his coat again.
This time, he pulled out a newer photograph.
It showed an elderly woman sitting on a porch.
I recognized her instantly.
My hands began trembling.
“No.”
Danny looked at me.
“Who is she?”
I couldn’t answer.
The woman in the photograph had lived three houses away from my parents when I was growing up.
We called her Miss Rosie.
She baked cookies for us.
She attended my high school graduation.
She helped me sew the hem of my white sundress before my courthouse wedding.
And after Danny disappeared, she was the woman who sat beside me on the porch while I cried.
“Oh my God.”
Margaret whispered, “I’m sorry.”
“Miss Rosie was Rose?”
“Yes.”
“She watched me grow up?”
“Yes.”
“She knew I was her daughter?”
Margaret nodded.
I felt something inside me break.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“Because Mother wouldn’t let her.”
“Mother wasn’t my mother!”
“She raised you.”
“Rose was alive!”
“Rose believed staying hidden was protecting you.”
I laughed through my tears.
“Protecting me. Again.”
That word had ruined my entire life.
Everybody had protected me so thoroughly that they’d taken everything away from me.
My husband.
My mother.
My history.
My choices.
Thomas pointed at the photograph.
“Rose disappeared from the nursing facility because she knew someone was coming.”
“You?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Before he could answer, Margaret suddenly grabbed my arm.
“Evelyn.”
Her voice had changed.
“What?”
“Your ring.”
I looked down.
“The vending-machine ring?”
“Yes.”
“What about it?”
“Where is it?”
“At home.”
Margaret’s eyes widened.
“The box?”
“Yes.”
“Is it the original box?”
My heart started beating faster.
“It’s a little blue jewelry box.”
“No. Before that.”
“What are you talking about?”
“The plastic capsule.”
I remembered the vending machine.
The little clear plastic capsule Danny had cracked open at the diner.
“I don’t know. That was fifty-five years ago.”
Margaret grabbed both my shoulders.
“Think.”
“I kept everything from the wedding in an old sewing tin.”
“Where?”
“My attic.”
Margaret looked at Danny.
“That’s where Rose put it.”
“Put what?”
“The key.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“What key?”
Margaret immediately realized she’d said too much.
Thomas’s face changed.
“The safe-deposit key.”
Margaret backed away.
“You said you didn’t know where the records were,” Thomas said.
“I don’t.”
“But Rose knew.”
Margaret turned to me.
“We need to get to your house.”
Thomas blocked the doorway.
“Nobody’s going anywhere until you tell me which bank.”
Danny stepped between them.
“Move.”
Thomas stared at him.
“I’m not my father, Danny.”
“Then stop behaving like him.”
For a moment, I thought they might fight.
Then we heard sirens outside.
Thomas’s face changed.
Margaret smiled faintly.
“I called the police before you came in.”
Thomas cursed under his breath.
He stepped toward the window.
Danny grabbed him.
Thomas shoved him away.
“Stop!” I screamed.
Blue lights suddenly flashed across the bedroom walls.
Thomas froze.
Then he looked at me.
“If you find that key, Evelyn, don’t open the box.”
“What box?”
“The one Rose left.”
“Why?”
His expression was deadly serious.
“Because whatever is inside it frightened my father for the rest of his life.”
Police officers shouted from downstairs.
Thomas raised his hands.
Moments later, they entered the room.
Everything became chaos.
Questions.
Paramedics.
Police.
Margaret explaining the broken window and the confrontation.
Thomas was taken downstairs while officers tried to determine exactly what had happened.
Before they led him outside, he turned toward me.
“Ask Danny what else Walter gave him in 1981.”
I looked at Danny.
His face went pale.
“What is he talking about?”
“Nothing.”
Thomas smiled.
“There’s still one letter she hasn’t seen.”
Then the police took him away.
I stared at Danny.
“What letter?”
“Evelyn, this isn’t the time.”
“After fifty-five years, don’t you dare tell me when it’s time.”
Margaret looked between us.
“Danny?”
He closed his eyes.
Then he reached inside his leather bag.
At the very bottom was a small sealed envelope.
My name was written on it.
Not in Danny’s handwriting.
Not my mother’s.
Not Robert’s.
Rose’s.
My hands shook.
“You’ve had a letter from my biological mother?”
Danny couldn’t look at me.
“Since 1981.”
The betrayal hit harder than anything else that night.
“Give it to me.”
“Evelyn—”
“Give it to me.”
He handed it over.
I tore it open.
Inside was one sheet of paper.
My dearest Evelyn,
If Danny has finally given you this letter, then either Walter is dead or our secret has failed.
I need you to forgive Danny. I made him promise not to tell you what I’m about to tell you until it was safe.
Your wedding ring was never just a wedding ring.
Danny and I both looked at each other.
I kept reading.
The night before your wedding, I placed something inside the plastic capsule your ring came in. I knew you kept sentimental things, and I prayed you would never have reason to discover it.
If you still have that capsule, there is a small brass key hidden beneath the paper lining.
The key opens a box in my real name.
Inside that box is proof of what Walter did.
But Evelyn, there is something else inside.
Something about Danny.
I stopped.
Danny’s face went white.
“What does she mean, something about you?”
“I don’t know.”
“Don’t lie to me again.”
“I’m not.”
I continued reading.
If Danny returned from Vietnam, I knew Walter would try to use his past against him. Danny does not know this, but his connection to our family began long before he met you in high school.
I slowly lowered the letter.
Danny stared at me.
“What?”
I read the final lines aloud.
Danny’s mother knew me.
She knew Walter.
And the truth about Danny’s father is the reason Walter was so desperate to keep the two of you apart.
Danny shook his head.
“My father died when I was six.”
I looked back at Rose’s letter.
There was one final sentence written beneath her signature.
When you open the box, bring Danny with you, because the documents inside may prove that the man he called his father wasn’t his father at all.
Danny sank onto the edge of the bed.
I thought that was the end.
Then Margaret whispered behind us.
“There’s more.”
We both turned.
She was staring at Danny with tears in her eyes.
“What do you mean?” he asked.
Margaret took a trembling breath.
“I know what’s in Rose’s box.”
“How?”
“Because I helped her put it there.”
My heart pounded.
“What is it?”
Margaret looked at me first.
Then at Danny.
And when she spoke, her voice was barely audible.
“A birth certificate.”
Danny frowned.
“Whose?”
Margaret began crying.
“Yours.”
Silence.
Danny slowly stood.
“My birth certificate?”
“Your real one.”
He stared at her.
“What does it say?”
Margaret wiped her tears.
“It says Walter Hayes was your father.”
Nobody moved.
Danny’s face emptied of color.
I looked from him to Margaret.
Then the final implication struck me.
If Walter Hayes might also have been my biological father…
And Walter Hayes was Danny’s father…
I couldn’t finish the thought.
Neither could Danny.
“Oh God,” he whispered.
Margaret immediately shook her head.
“No. That’s why you need the box.”
“Why?”
“Because Rose discovered something else before she disappeared.”
“What?”
Margaret looked straight at me.
“Walter wasn’t your father.”
My breath caught.
“Then who was?”
Margaret’s lips trembled.
“The answer is in the box.”
I grabbed my coat.
Danny stared at me.
“Where are you going?”
“Home.”
“It’s after midnight.”
“I don’t care.”
“What if the capsule isn’t there?”
“Then we’ll keep looking.”
“And if it is?”
I looked at the man I’d waited fifty-five years to see again.
“Then tonight, this ends.”
But Margaret caught my arm before I reached the door.
“No, Evelyn.”
“What?”
Her face had gone pale again.
“If that key is still in your attic, we have a bigger problem.”
“What problem?”
She swallowed.
“Rose’s box isn’t sitting in some bank vault.”
“Then where is it?”
Margaret looked toward the dark window.
“She moved it before she disappeared.”
“Where?”
“To the only place Walter Hayes would never think to search.”
I waited.
Margaret whispered:
“Under Danny’s grave.”……………….

Click Here to continuous Read Full Ending Story👉:PART 5 — THE LIFE THEY COULDN’T STEAL

I stared at the name written on the back of the photograph.
