Ben stepped past her and shut the door himself. For a moment, his hand rested against it, as though he might keep her outside.
“I found a box,” he said.
I turned toward him. “In my mother’s room?”
“It was the sewing room by then. I went in looking for a ball that had rolled under your bed. There was a loose floorboard near the closet.”
I remembered that room. My narrow bed had blocked the closet door, and Linda complained every morning that she couldn’t get to her things. I had pushed the bed back and forth so many times I could still hear its wooden legs scraping the floor.
“What was in the box?”
“Papers. Photographs. A little bottle.”
Dad made a sound in his throat. “Ben brought the bottle to Linda. She told me people would come looking for them. She said they might come to the house while I was at work.”
“You believed that?”
“I didn’t, at first.”
“Tell her the rest,” Linda said.
Dad’s eyes filled. “Two nights later, someone came into your room.”
I gripped the back of the visitor chair. “What?”
“I heard a noise. When I got upstairs, your window was open, and there was a man standing beside your bed.”

I had a memory then, faint as a dream: cold air against my face, Dad’s voice shouting, the bedroom light burning so brightly it hurt my eyes. He ran.”
“Did you call the police?”
Dad lowered his gaze.
“Of course you didn’t,” I said.
“I was going to. Linda said if I did, I’d have to tell them about the box. She said your mother had taken those papers from her job and that I could lose you if anyone found out.”
Linda folded her arms. “Your father made his own choices.”
“Yes,” Dad said. “I did.”
I wanted to shout at him. I wanted to ask how a place full of children he didn’t know had seemed safer than staying with him. But Ben spoke before I could.

“The man came back,” he said.
Linda spun toward him. “Ben.”
“I saw him in the driveway the Saturday Dad took her away. He was sitting in a blue car across the street, watching the house.”
Dad nodded. “I thought if you weren’t there, he’d stop looking for you. The next week, when I went to bring you home, Linda told me the man had found the home. She said they’d moved you to protect you.”
“That’s a lie,” Ben said.
Linda stared at him.

“I know because I heard you on the phone,” he continued. “You told someone Dad had stopped asking about her.”
“I was trying to keep this family together.”
“You kept me out of it,” I said. “You could have told me I wasn’t forgotten.”
Linda’s eyes met mine. “Would you have believed me?”
“No,” I said. “But you could have told me the truth.”
Dad reached for the call button on his bed, and I thought he needed a nurse.
