I thought if I watched closely enough, I\u2019d see your car before anyone else did.\u201d<br \/>\nHis face crumpled.<br \/>\n\u201cI know.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo, you don\u2019t. I kept my clothes in that grocery bag for six months. I was afraid if I unpacked, you\u2019d come while I wasn\u2019t ready.\u201d<br \/>\nDad reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a yellowed envelope. My name was written across the front in my mother\u2019s handwriting.<br \/>\nI knew it instantly. Mom always made the last letter of my name curl upward, like a tiny wave.<br \/>\n\u201cShe left this for you,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nMy chest tightened. \u201cYou had a letter from Mom all this time?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe gave it to me two days before she died. She said to keep it safe until you were old enough to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thirty,\u201d I said. \u201cWhen were you planning to tell me?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI tried to find you.\u201d<br \/>\nI let out a bitter laugh. \u201cThe children\u2019s home knew where I was for years.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI know.\u201d His voice broke. \u201cI went there.\u201d<br \/>\nThat stopped me.<br \/>\n\u201cThe first time, they wouldn\u2019t let me see you. The second time, they told me you\u2019d been moved. After that, every place I called said something different.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou could\u2019ve written.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI did.\u201d<br \/>\nI thought of all the afternoons I\u2019d asked the staff whether I had mail. All the times they\u2019d shaken their heads.<br \/>\nDad saw the look on my face. \u201cYou never got them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\nHe stared at the envelope as if it could answer for him. \u201cI should have gone back. I should have kept looking until I found you. Nothing I tell you changes that.\u201d<br \/>\nFor the first time since I\u2019d entered the room, he wasn\u2019t asking me to forgive him.<br \/>\nHe held out the envelope. Inside was a photograph of Mom standing beside a woman I\u2019d never seen. They had their arms around each other, laughing into the camera. On the back, in Mom\u2019s handwriting, were six words: <em>Find Ruth. She knows what happened.<\/em><br \/>\nMy fingers turned cold.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat happened?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\nDad looked toward the closed door. \u201cRead the letter.\u201d<br \/>\nThe paper was thin and soft at the folds. I opened it carefully.<br \/>\n<em>My darling girl,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>If you\u2019re reading this, then your father has finally told you the truth. I hope he\u2019s told you the whole of it, even the part that makes him ashamed.<\/em><br \/>\nI stopped. Dad was watching my face, tears gathered in his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<br \/>\n<em>I\u2019m frightened of what Linda knows about me. If she comes to this house after I\u2019m gone, please find Ruth Bell. She has the records I couldn\u2019t keep here.<\/em><br \/>\n\u201cLinda?\u201d I looked up. \u201cMom knew Linda?\u201d<br \/>\nDad nodded once.<br \/>\nI heard footsteps outside the room. Linda\u2019s voice came through the door, too low for me to make out the words. Ben answered her. Then the footsteps stopped.<br \/>\n\u201cMom died before you married Linda,\u201d I whispered.<br \/>\n\u201cShe did.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHow long had you known her?\u201d<br \/>\nDad swallowed. \u201cLonger than I told you.\u201d<br \/>\nThe door handle moved. Dad\u2019s hand closed over mine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut the letter in your bag,\u201d he said quickly. \u201cDon\u2019t let her see you have it.\u201d<br \/>\nLinda opened the door before I could answer.<br \/>\nShe looked at Dad, then at the empty envelope on the bed. Her expression changed so fast I might have missed it if I hadn\u2019t been watching.<br \/>\n\u201cIs this a bad time?\u201d she asked.<br \/>\nI folded Mom\u2019s letter and slipped it into my coat pocket.<br \/>\n\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cIt is.\u201d<br \/>\nLinda didn\u2019t move. She kept looking at my pocket.<br \/>\nBehind her, Ben appeared in the doorway. He wasn\u2019t the little boy I remembered, but I recognized the nervous way he glanced from his mother to me.<br \/>\nDad drew a shaky breath. \u201cLeave us alone, Linda.\u201d<br \/>\nShe ignored him. \u201cWhatever he\u2019s told you, he\u2019s very ill.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI can see that.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what things were like back then.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen explain them.\u201d<br \/>\nFor a moment, no one spoke.
