Where are your results?\u201d<br \/>\nDad stared at the envelope. \u201cThere\u2019s another page.\u201d<br \/>\nHe pulled it out.<br \/>\nI watched Lily read it. Her face drained of color.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\nShe passed it to me.<br \/>\nAccording to the report, Dad was Lily\u2019s biological father.<br \/>\nHe wasn\u2019t mine.<br \/>\nI looked at him. \u201cYou knew.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI knew what the test said,\u201d he answered.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you let me spend twenty years believing you were ashamed of my face.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI was afraid you\u2019d think I stopped loving you when I found out.\u201d<br \/>\nA laugh escaped me, sharp and disbelieving. \u201cYou stopped taking me anywhere. You stopped mentioning me. What was I supposed to think?\u201d<br \/>\nDad flinched.<br \/>\nLily stepped between us. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell us?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDaniel had been watching Emma. Your mother\u2019s friend told me there might have been a mix-up at the hospital. I thought if I could keep him away long enough, I could find out what really happened.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSo you got the test,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd then?\u201d<br \/>\nDad\u2019s eyes filled. \u201cThen I couldn\u2019t bear to tell you. I was the only parent you had left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The front door opened wider. My husband, Ben, came out, followed by our ten-year-old daughter, Rose. She stopped when she saw us.<br \/>\n\u201cMom? Did something happen?\u201d<br \/>\nI folded the report before she could read it. \u201cGo inside with Dad, sweetheart. I\u2019ll be there in a minute.\u201d<br \/>\nBen looked at me, then gently guided her back toward the birthday cake.<br \/>\nI waited until the door closed. \u201cWho are my parents?\u201d<br \/>\nDad\u2019s silence was answer enough to one question: he still had more to tell.<br \/>\n\u201cI found the other family,\u201d he said. \u201cTheir name was Bennett. They\u2019d had a daughter the same night your mother gave birth.\u201d<br \/>\nLily leaned against the porch railing. \u201cThe girl who went home with them was supposed to be Emma?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat was what I believed.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd what happened to their daughter?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dad rubbed a hand over his face. \u201cThere was no other daughter living with them when I went looking.\u201d<br \/>\nI stared at him.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Bennetts told me their baby died before they left the hospital. I didn\u2019t know whether the records were wrong, whether Daniel had lied, or whether the test was wrong. I hired someone to find the original hospital files. By then, the nursery records had been archived, and some were missing.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid you tell the Bennetts about me?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d His voice broke. \u201cI was afraid they would take you.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked down at the faded photograph in my hand. All those years, I had thought the space Dad kept around me meant he didn\u2019t want me seen. Now I understood that he had been trying to keep someone else from seeing me.<br \/>\nIt didn\u2019t make the empty chair beside him at my graduation hurt any less.<br \/>\n\u201cYou should have told me when I was an adult,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d he whispered. \u201cI should have.\u201d<br \/>\nLily picked up Mom\u2019s letter. \u201cThere\u2019s more on the back.\u201d<br \/>\nDad lifted his head sharply. \u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\nShe turned the page over. In the lower corner, beneath a fold, Mom had written two lines in tiny handwriting.<br \/>\n<em>Daniel is lying about why he wants to find her.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ask him what happened to the Bennett baby.<\/em><br \/>\nDad went utterly still.<br \/>\n\u201cYou never saw this?\u201d Lily asked.<br \/>\n\u201cI read that letter a hundred times.\u201d His voice was thin. \u201cI never unfolded that corner.\u201d<br \/>\nMy phone buzzed inside the house. A moment later, Ben opened the door again.<br \/>\n\u201cEmma, someone\u2019s calling you over and over. The name on the screen is Daniel Mercer.\u201d<br \/>\nDad rose so quickly the box slipped from his knees.<br \/>\nI took the phone from Ben. The call ended before I could answer. A text appeared in its place.<br \/>\n<em>Your father finally brought the box. Good.
