You told him she couldn’t make it.”

I remembered that day. I’d graduated from college that same spring. Dad had said he couldn’t afford the trip to my ceremony. Two weeks later, he’d flown across the country for Lily’s.
I’d thought I knew every part of that hurt. Now it had another face.
“Emma,” Dad said, “I didn’t know he’d gone to Lily’s graduation.”
“You never told me someone was watching me.”
“I went to the police when you were fourteen. They spoke to him. He stopped sending photographs for a while.” Dad glanced at the box. “Then your mother’s letter arrived.”
“Arrived from where? She was dead.”
“She’d left it with a friend. The friend was supposed to give it to me if Daniel approached you.”
Lily’s fingers tightened around the photograph. “Dad, what did Mom mean about the night Emma was born?”
He looked at both of us, and for a moment I saw the man who had stood at our front door twenty-five years earlier, newly widowed and terrified. It didn’t erase what he’d done. It made me wonder what else fear had made him capable of.

“Your mother went into labor early,” he said. “I was working two hours away. Daniel drove her to the hospital.”
I glanced at Mom’s letter. “Why would she call him?”
“She didn’t. He was at her office when it happened. They worked together.”
Dad lowered himself onto the porch bench. “By the time I got there, you’d been born. Your mother was exhausted, but she was holding you. She told me there had been a problem during the delivery and you’d needed help breathing.”
“That happens,” Lily said.
“Yes.” Dad stared at the floorboards. “But years later, Daniel began sending letters saying I owed him for what he did in that room. I thought he was trying to make himself important to Emma.”
I pulled another envelope from the box. The postmark was from the year after Mom died. Inside was a photocopy of a hospital form. Across the bottom, beside Witness, was Daniel Mercer’s signature.
Beneath it, in his handwriting, he had written:
Ask her why the bracelet had a different name.

I felt my pulse in my throat. “What bracelet?”
Dad shook his head. “I didn’t know. When I asked your mother’s friend, she told me to read the letter.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Then tell me.”
He looked at Lily. “I need you to hear this too.”
Mom’s letter trembled in my hands as I unfolded it again. Dad pointed to the paragraph I hadn’t reached.
There were two baby girls in the nursery that night. Emma’s bracelet came off while the nurses were treating her. By the time anyone noticed, the babies had been moved. Daniel saw a nurse put a bracelet on the wrong child. He told me, but I was too frightened to believe him.
Lily stopped breathing beside me.
I looked at Dad. “You had twenty years to tell me.”
“I had longer than that,” he whispered.
The porch went silent.
I searched his face. “What does that mean?”
Dad reached into his coat and took out a sealed envelope I hadn’t seen in the box. A laboratory’s name was printed in the corner.
“I had both of you tested after your mother died,” he said. “I was afraid Daniel would use the story to take you away from me.”
He held out the envelope, but I couldn’t make myself touch it.
“Both of us?” Lily asked.
Dad nodded.
“Which baby was switched?” I whispered.
Tears filled his eyes. “Emma, I thought I knew. Then I got the results.”
He opened the envelope with shaking fingers, unfolded the first page, and turned it toward us.
At the top were our names. Beneath them was a sentence highlighted in yellow.
I read it once.
Then I looked at Lily, because the result said she and I were not biologically related…………………

Click Here to continuous Read Full Ending Story👉:PART 4: THE DAUGHTER HE HID

I read Mom’s first sentence three times.
