I’ll meet you outside it.”
I sent Mrs. Carter one message.
Marcus is coming with me.
Her reply came at once.
Good. I trust him.
By the time we reached the eighth floor, two police officers were waiting with her.

Mrs. Carter opened the door herself. Without the designer coat and perfect smile, she looked exhausted.
“I owe you an apology,” she said.
“You owe me my job,” I answered. “And an explanation.”
“Yes.”
She sat on the edge of the bed and told me she had been investigating her husband’s use of her foundation. She had signed fundraising appeals while he controlled the accounts. When Daniel questioned charges on his hospital bill, he discovered that donations raised for patients were being routed through a separate account.
“Daniel kept copies,” she said. “He was afraid to tell you while you were caring for him and the girls.”
I held up the photograph. “Why did he write this?”
She looked at the words on its back.

“I asked him to write down a way to identify the photograph if I ever had to give it to you. He wrote that you could never know about me while he was alive. He didn’t want my husband coming after your family.”
“That’s a terrible thing to leave a wife guessing about.”
“It was,” she said quietly.
I thought of every night I had spent beside Daniel’s hospital bed. I wished he had trusted me enough to share the burden.
“Why accuse me of stealing your ring?”
“I learned where you worked. I tried contacting you, but someone intercepted the letters I sent. Then I saw your manager talking to my husband yesterday morning. I panicked.”
“So you sacrificed my job to get me into a security office?”
“I thought the accusation would force them to review the footage and find the note. I thought I could withdraw it before they fired you.”
“You thought wrong.”
Her eyes filled with tears. I felt no urge to comfort her.

One of the officers stepped forward. “Mrs. Bennett, we’ve obtained records for the private mailbox. We’d like you to see them.”
The mailbox had been rented using a copy of my identification from my hotel employment file. My manager had collected its mail for months.
Among the envelopes were statements for an account opened in my name.
The seventy-eight-thousand-dollar hospital refund had gone into it.
Most of the money was still there.
The missing amount had been withdrawn by my manager.
He was arrested before his shift ended. Mr. Carter was taken in for questioning after investigators matched the foundation records Daniel had saved to transfers through the same account.
There would be a long investigation. The officers were careful to say that Daniel’s records were evidence, not an instant answer to every question.

But they were enough to start.
Mrs. Carter withdrew her accusation in writing. The hotel offered me my position back, along with pay for the shifts I had missed.
I turned it down.
I couldn’t return to a place where my manager had used my employee file to steal from my daughters, then watched me get fired for a theft I hadn’t committed.
A week later, Marcus brought me a small box recovered from the private mailbox.
Inside were copies of the hospital records and a letter in Daniel’s handwriting.
Rachel,
If this reaches you, I’m sorry I couldn’t put it in your hands myself. I found money that should have gone to patients, and I was trying to make sure the people responsible couldn’t hide it. I set aside everything I could for you and the girls. Please let someone help you when you need it. You have carried us for so long.
At the bottom, the writing grew uneven.
Tell our daughters I loved being their dad.
I sat at the kitchen table for a long time with the letter in my lap.
Then my girls climbed into the chairs beside me and asked what Daddy had written.
I read them the last line.
“Did he really love being our dad?” one of them asked.
“More than anything,” I said.
She smiled and rested her head against my arm.
The account was frozen while investigators traced the transactions. I still had bills to pay and a job to find. Marcus helped me contact a lawyer, and the hotel corrected my employment record and paid what it owed me.
Months later, the first recovered funds were released.
I paid the rent.
I bought groceries without adding up every item in my head.
And when my daughters needed new shoes, I let them choose the ones with bright yellow stars.
That night, after they fell asleep, I took Daniel’s letter from the kitchen drawer and read it once more.
He had wanted someone to help me carry the weight.
For the first time since he died, I believed I could let them.
I put the letter away, turned off the kitchen light, and went to check on our girls.

I called Marcus and sent him the picture. “That’s our manager,” he said. “I know.” “Don’t go to room 814 alone.
