He said he\u2019d found records connecting her charitable foundation to patients who never received the money raised in their names.\u201d<br \/>\nMy manager frowned. \u201cWhat does that have to do with Rachel\u2019s job?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cEverything,\u201d Mr. Carter said.<br \/>\nI held up the photograph. \u201cThen why were they together?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause she offered to pay his hospital bill if he gave her the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd did he?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t believe him.<br \/>\nMarcus didn\u2019t either.<br \/>\nHe moved toward the office door. \u201cThe police are on their way. You can tell them.\u201d<br \/>\nMr. Carter\u2019s expression hardened.<br \/>\n\u201cYou think my wife planted that ring because she wanted Rachel arrested? She wanted the hotel to pull its security footage.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou mean the footage that shows her setting me up?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cShe knew that camera would catch her. She wanted you back here with Marcus. She wanted you to find the note before I did.\u201d<br \/>\nA cold feeling settled in my stomach.<br \/>\n\u201cIf she wanted to talk to me, why didn\u2019t she just say it yesterday?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause I was standing beside her.\u201d<br \/>\nMy manager took a step away from him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Carter noticed and gave a tired laugh.<br \/>\n\u201cYes. That part, at least, you understand.\u201d<br \/>\nI thought of the messages on my phone.<br \/>\nHe knows where your daughters go to daycare.<br \/>\n\u201cGet out,\u201d I said.<br \/>\n\u201cI can tell you what\u2019s in Daniel\u2019s account.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ll ask the hospital myself.\u201d<br \/>\nHis eyes dropped to the numbers on the photograph.<br \/>\n\u201cGo ahead. But ask them who paid the bill. And ask where the refund went.\u201d<br \/>\nA knock came at the door.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two police officers stood outside.<br \/>\nMarcus opened it and began explaining what the cameras had captured. Mr. Carter stayed silent as one officer asked him to wait in the lobby.<br \/>\nWhen he was gone, my manager turned to me.<br \/>\n\u201cRachel, about your dismissal\u2014\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cLater.\u201d<br \/>\nI needed to get to my daughters.<br \/>\nMarcus drove me to the daycare and waited while I collected them. They came running across the room, carrying paper crowns they had made that morning.<br \/>\nI hugged them until one complained she couldn\u2019t breathe.<br \/>\nOnly after I had taken them to my neighbor\u2019s apartment, where I knew they would be safe, did I go to the hospital.<br \/>\nThe billing clerk typed Daniel\u2019s account number into her computer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Her smile faded.<br \/>\n\u201cAre you his spouse?\u201d<br \/>\nI showed her my identification.<br \/>\nShe read the screen for a long time.<br \/>\n\u201cDaniel\u2019s balance was paid in full three weeks before he died,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cBy Mrs. Carter?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe payment came from the Carter Foundation.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd the refund?\u201d<br \/>\nThe clerk looked up sharply.<br \/>\n\u201cYou know about that?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo. I only know someone told me to ask.\u201d<br \/>\nShe glanced toward the office behind her, then lowered her voice.<br \/>\n\u201cAfter the payment cleared, we found that the foundation had paid charges your insurance had already covered. A refund of seventy-eight thousand dollars was issued.\u201d<br \/>\nI gripped the counter.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere did it go?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt was sent to an account Daniel designated.\u201d<br \/>\nI stared at her.<br \/>\n\u201cMy husband left me with medical debt. I\u2019ve been paying it every month.\u201d<br \/>\nShe turned her screen slightly so I could see.<br \/>\nSeveral bills were still open under Daniel\u2019s name, but the refunded money had gone elsewhere.<br \/>\n\u201cCan you give me the account details?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cI can request the payment records for you. They may take a few days.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWho was named on the account?\u201d<br \/>\nShe hesitated.<br \/>\nThen she pointed to a field on the screen.<br \/>\nBeneficiary: Rachel Bennett.<br \/>\nMy name.<br \/>\nBelow it was a mailing address I had never seen.<br \/>\nI took a picture before she turned the monitor back.<br \/>\nOutside the hospital, I called Marcus.<br \/>\n\u201cI found the refund. It was in an account with my name on it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid you open it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cText me the address.\u201d<br \/>\nI sent it.<br \/>\nHe called back almost immediately.<br \/>\n\u201cRachel, that\u2019s a private mailbox two blocks from the hotel.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at the photograph in my other hand.<br \/>\nDaniel\u2019s handwriting.<br \/>\nThe date.<br \/>\nMrs. Carter standing beside him.<br \/>\nFor months, I had believed he\u2019d left us with nothing but bills.<br \/>\nMaybe he had tried to leave us something else.<br \/>\nMaybe someone had made sure it never reached me.<br \/>\nMy phone buzzed with another message from Mrs. Carter.<br \/>\nI\u2019m in room 814. Come alone.
