Put it on speaker.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHello?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cRachel,\u201d a woman said. \u201cYou found the photograph.\u201d<br \/>\nMrs. Carter.<br \/>\nMy grip tightened around the phone.<br \/>\n\u201cYou got me fired.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI did.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou accused me of stealing a ring you never lost.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\nMarcus leaned closer.<br \/>\nThe recording light on his phone was already on.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy?\u201d I demanded.<br \/>\nMrs. Carter exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you wouldn\u2019t have spoken to me otherwise.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou could have knocked on my door.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI tried.\u201d<br \/>\nI went still.<br \/>\n\u201cThree months ago. And again last month. You didn\u2019t answer.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI never heard anyone knock.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSomeone did.\u201d<br \/>\nBefore I could ask who, a man\u2019s voice spoke faintly behind her.<br \/>\nMrs. Carter went quiet.<br \/>\nWhen she spoke again, her voice had changed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo to the hospital. Ask for the billing office. Daniel\u2019s account number is written behind the photograph.\u201d<br \/>\nThe call ended.<br \/>\nI turned the photograph over.<br \/>\nBeneath Daniel\u2019s handwriting, in much smaller letters, was a string of numbers.<br \/>\nMarcus looked at me. \u201cI can go with you.\u201d<br \/>\nI wanted to say no. I wanted to go home, lock the door, and pretend I had never seen any of it.<br \/>\nInstead, I thought of my daughters.<br \/>\nIf someone had come looking for me twice, I needed to know why.<br \/>\n\u201cFirst, we show your manager the footage,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nMarcus hesitated.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI already told him I found something. He\u2019s calling corporate security. But Mrs. Carter\u2019s husband is still in the hotel.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cGood. He can see what she did.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s the thing,\u201d Marcus said. \u201cHe checked out this morning. Alone. She\u2019s still here.\u201d<br \/>\nI remembered the man\u2019s voice behind her on the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she?\u201d<br \/>\nMarcus pulled up the guest list.<br \/>\nHis expression tightened.<br \/>\n\u201cRoom 814. She booked it under another name.\u201d<br \/>\nMy phone buzzed.<br \/>\nA text from the same unknown number.<br \/>\nPlease don\u2019t tell my husband I called you.<br \/>\nThen another.<br \/>\nHe knows where your daughters go to daycare.<br \/>\nMarcus saw my face and read the messages over my shoulder.<br \/>\nFor a few seconds, neither of us spoke.<br \/>\nThen he said, \u201cWe\u2019re calling the police.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShow them the footage. I\u2019m calling the daycare.\u201d<br \/>\nMy fingers shook so badly I dialed the wrong number once.<br \/>\nWhen the director answered, I asked her to keep my daughters inside and release them only to me. She promised she would.<br \/>\nI was pulling on my coat when the security office door opened.<br \/>\nMy manager stood there with a tall man in a dark suit.<br \/>\nI recognized him immediately.<br \/>\nMrs. Carter\u2019s husband.<br \/>\nHe looked from me to the photograph in my hand.<br \/>\nFor the first time since he had arrived at the hotel, his polished expression slipped.<br \/>\n\u201cRachel,\u201d he said softly. \u201cI was hoping she hadn\u2019t shown you that.\u201d<br \/>\nMarcus stepped between us.<br \/>\nThe man raised both hands.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m not here to hurt anyone.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen stay where you are,\u201d Marcus said.<br \/>\nMr. Carter\u2019s eyes remained on me.<br \/>\n\u201cMy wife has been trying to tell you something.
