I remembered lifting that pillow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On-screen, my hand stopped.<br \/>\nI pulled out the envelope.<br \/>\nAcross the front, in thick black handwriting, was one word.<br \/>\nRACHEL.<br \/>\nI had forgotten about it until that moment.<br \/>\nI looked at Marcus. \u201cIt was empty.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou opened it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes. I thought a guest had left a note about the room. There was nothing inside, so I put it on the desk.\u201d<br \/>\nOn the screen, I did exactly that.<br \/>\nA minute later, while I was in the bathroom, the suite door opened.<br \/>\nI grabbed the edge of Marcus\u2019s desk.<br \/>\n\u201cI thought you said nobody else came in.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo other employee used a key,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Carter stepped into the room.<br \/>\nShe had been waiting down the hallway, out of sight of the camera management had reviewed.<br \/>\nThe second angle caught her slipping through her own door.<br \/>\nShe crossed to the desk, picked up the envelope, and tucked it into her handbag.<br \/>\nThen she opened the nightstand drawer.<br \/>\nShe placed something inside.<br \/>\nI leaned forward.<br \/>\nA silver ring box.<br \/>\n\u201cShe put it there while I was cleaning?\u201d<br \/>\nMarcus nodded.<br \/>\n\u201cShe was inside for eleven seconds. You were running the shower to rinse the bathroom floor. You never heard her.\u201d<br \/>\nI watched her leave.<br \/>\nLess than ten minutes later, she returned with her husband and began shouting about the missing ring.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she put the box in the drawer,\u201d I said. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t they find it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause the box was empty.\u201d<br \/>\nMarcus played another clip.<br \/>\nMrs. Carter opened the drawer before calling the front desk. She took out the empty box and held it up for her husband to see.<br \/>\nShe had created proof that a ring had been there.<br \/>\nMy hands began to shake.<br \/>\n\u201cShe knew I\u2019d opened an envelope with my name on it. She wanted me to think about that instead of the drawer.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMaybe,\u201d Marcus said.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere\u2019s the envelope now?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe took it with her. But she left something else.\u201d<br \/>\nHe opened a photo on his computer.<br \/>\nIt showed the underside of the nightstand drawer, which had been pulled all the way out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A folded piece of paper was taped beneath it.<br \/>\nI frowned. \u201cHow did you find that?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhen I saw her touch the drawer, I went back to the suite. She checked out yesterday, but housekeeping hadn\u2019t finished it yet.\u201d<br \/>\nHe reached into a clear evidence bag and took out the folded paper.<br \/>\nThe first line stopped me cold.<br \/>\nRachel,<br \/>\nI know what happened to your husband.<br \/>\nFor a moment, I couldn\u2019t breathe.<br \/>\nMy husband, Daniel, had died eight months earlier.<br \/>\nI had spent nearly two years taking him to appointments, watching treatments fail, and holding his hand through the last night of his life.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat is this?\u201d I whispered.<br \/>\n\u201cI haven\u2019t read past the first line,\u201d Marcus said. \u201cIt\u2019s addressed to you.\u201d<br \/>\nI unfolded it.<br \/>\nThere were only three more sentences.<br \/>\nAsk your husband\u2019s doctor about the woman who paid his final hospital bill. She used a different name then.
