We found someone who understands how to help family.
I read the words twice.
Then Beth pulled her phone back and opened a photograph.
“I took this before I left.”
“Why?”
“Because I had a bad feeling. And because Mom was standing over me telling me it was none of my business.”
The photograph showed a stack of papers on Diane’s kitchen table.
A blue pen.
The corner of a floral placemat.
And the signature line.
Blank.
I felt my pulse in my throat.
“Can you send that to Elaine?”
Beth nodded.
“I’ll send everything.”
“Will you tell her what you just told me?”
She looked toward the window.
For several seconds, I thought she would refuse.
Then she turned back.
“Yes.”
I looked at the photograph again.
A blank line in a kitchen I knew.
It wasn’t the whole answer.
But it was a moment before the lie became a document.
And someone had kept it.
Elaine met with Beth that afternoon.
I stayed in the waiting room while they spoke.
For forty minutes, I watched the second hand move around the wall clock.
When Beth came out, her face was blotchy.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
I stood.
“I wish you had called.”
“I know.”
There was nothing else to say that would make that smaller.
Still, when she asked whether she could hug me, I let her.

Two days later, we went to court for the first urgent hearing.
It wasn’t the final reckoning I had imagined during sleepless nights.
There were other cases.
Other worried people carrying folders.
A woman beside me was holding a grocery bag full of papers.
Somebody’s phone kept vibrating against a wooden bench.
Travis sat across the room in a shirt I had ironed before his last hitch.
Diane sat beside him.
She never looked at me.
Elaine had warned me that the hearing would be limited.
The judge wasn’t going to solve every financial question that morning.
But by the time we left, there was an order barring further transfers or encumbrances of the disputed property while the case proceeded, along with requirements to preserve relevant records.
I held my copy with both hands.
For the first time in weeks, there was something between their plans and my front door.
Outside the courtroom, Travis approached.
His attorney said his name sharply.
He kept walking.
“June, wait.”
Elaine stepped beside me.
“What is it, Travis?”
He looked at her, then at me.
“I need five minutes.”
“You can speak through counsel,” Elaine said.
His face tightened.
“This isn’t about the case.”
Diane had reached the hallway behind him.
She stopped when she heard that.
Travis looked back at her.
Something passed between them that I didn’t understand.
Then he turned to me again.
“Check the metal cabinet in the workshop.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“The bottom drawer.
