The police said there were no other vehicles involved. I had accepted that because I couldn’t bear to ask whether something else had happened in his final moments.
Now I held an envelope he’d labeled About the accident.
“Evan,” I said, “would you give us a minute?”
He shook his head. “Dad wrote my name on a note in that box. If this is about him, I want to stay.”
I couldn’t argue with that. I broke the seal.

Inside were copies of a repair estimate, two photographs, and a note from Daniel. One photograph showed our old car parked beneath a streetlight. The other showed its rear bumper, dented and streaked with dark green paint.
The repair estimate was dated eleven days before Daniel died.
I frowned. “What am I looking at?”
June pulled out a chair. “Daniel came here that night with the pictures. He said another car hit him outside the pharmacy. The driver asked him not to report it and offered to pay for the damage.”
“Why would Daniel leave these with you?”
“Because the driver called him afterward. More than once.”
I unfolded Daniel’s note. His handwriting grew harder to read toward the bottom, as if he’d written it in a hurry.

The man who hit my car says I pulled out in front of him. I didn’t. He wants me to sign a statement for his insurance company, and I told him I wouldn’t sign something false. If he calls again, I’m going to the police.
Below that, Daniel had written a name: Cal Mercer.
I knew it. Cal owned the repair shop where Daniel sometimes took our car. After the funeral, he had come by with a casserole and told me Daniel had been a good man.
Evan looked at the photograph. “That’s the car.”
“What car?”
“The one outside the diner today. The man who came for June. It was dark green.”
June shook her head. “My son drives a green car too, Evan. Lots of people do.”

“No. I saw a dent above the back wheel.” Evan pointed to a mark in Daniel’s photograph. “Right there. When the man pulled up, I recognized it.”
My mouth went dry. “Your son is Cal Mercer?”
June closed her eyes. “Yes.”
The room went quiet.
“You knew Daniel was arguing with your son,” I said. “And you never told me?”
“Daniel asked me to keep the papers safe. After he died, I should have brought them to you. Cal swore the calls had stopped. I wanted to believe him.”
I took out my phone and photographed every page before putting them back in the envelope. Then I called the police nonemergency number and explained what we had found. The officer I spoke to asked us to bring the papers in that evening.
Evan was still studying the photograph. “Cal knew who I was,” he said softly.

June looked up. “What do you mean?”
“He came to the diner last month. He asked Mr. Alvarez whether I was Daniel’s son. Then he started coming by on Saturdays.”
I thought of Evan arriving home late with a torn sleeve. “The day you said you fell. Was Cal there?”
Evan hesitated.
“Tell me.”
“He followed me when I left June’s apartment. He asked what she’d given me. I tried to get past him, and my sleeve caught on a fence.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t know what he wanted. And I thought you’d make me stop helping June.”
I pulled him against me. “You should have been able to tell me.”
“I know,” he whispered.
My phone rang. Mr. Alvarez’s name lit the screen.
“I’m closing up,” he said when I answered. “Mara, Cal just came back. He asked where Evan went.”
“We’re together. I’ve called the police.”
“Good. Because he left something here for June. An envelope. It has your name on it.”
“What’s inside?”
“I haven’t opened it.” Mr. Alvarez paused. “But he wrote a message on the front.”
I tightened my hold on Evan.
Mr. Alvarez read it aloud: “You have Daniel’s papers. I have the rest.”…………………..

Click Here to continuous Read Full Ending Story👉:PART 5: WHAT EVAN WAS REALLY SAVING

For three years, I had called it the accident.
