His boss stood nearby with the phone still in his hand, while a waitress guided a shaking man toward the door.
“Mom,” Evan whispered. “I can explain.”
The woman looked up at me. Her face was pale, and beneath the blood on her fingers I saw a small silver ring I knew by heart.
It had belonged to my husband.
I gripped the edge of the booth. “Where did you get that?”
Evan moved between us so quickly that the towel slipped from his hands.

“Please,” he said. “Let me tell you first.”
His boss knelt to check the woman’s hand. “The cut isn’t deep. An ambulance is coming to make sure she’s all right.”
I barely heard him. Three years ago, I had placed that ring in the top drawer of my dresser after my husband died. Last winter, I’d opened the drawer and found it gone. I’d searched the house twice before deciding I must have moved it.
The woman pulled the towel back over her hand. “Evan didn’t steal it,” she said.
“I didn’t say he did.”
But I was looking at my son, and he knew what I was thinking.
“He brought it to me,” she continued. “He said it was his father’s.”
“Who are you?”
Evan’s boss answered before she could. “Her name is June. She’s been coming here every Saturday for years. Your son asked me for a job because he knew she’d be here.”

Evan stared at the floor.
“What does that have to do with his paychecks?” I asked.
June’s eyes filled with tears. She slid a worn envelope across the table. My husband’s name was written on the front in handwriting I didn’t recognize.
I reached for it, but Evan caught my wrist.
“Mom, I found her address in Dad’s old coat,” he said. “And the letters. I know I should’ve told you.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
“Because you already worked so hard after he died. And when I came here, she was about to lose her apartment.”
His boss spoke gently. “Evan’s been giving June his wages. I thought you knew. When I found out you didn’t, I told him I had to call.”

I looked from the envelope to my son. “You’ve been helping her for six months?”
“Dad helped her before he got sick,” Evan said. “He never told us because she made him promise not to. I thought if I earned my own money, I could keep helping without putting it on you.”
Outside, a siren sounded.
I remembered Evan coming home exhausted, saying he was almost ready to buy a bike. I remembered how proud I’d felt. Now he stood before me with a torn sleeve, afraid I would be angry that he had spent every dollar on someone else.
“Why were you shouting?” I asked.
June glanced toward the door where the shaking man had stood. “That was my son. He came to ask me for money again. Evan tried to give him his paycheck so he’d leave. I reached for his arm, and he knocked the mug out of my hand.”
“You gave him money?” I asked Evan.

“I tried. Mr. Alvarez stopped me.”
His boss nodded. “I have the envelope right here.”
June pushed my husband’s letter closer to me. “There’s something else. I told Evan last week, and he’s been trying to find the courage to tell you.”
I opened the envelope. Inside was a photograph of my husband standing outside this diner, smiling beside June. On the back, he had written a date and seven words:
If I’m gone, please give her this.
June reached into her coat pocket and set a small brass key on the table.
“Your husband left something with me,” she said. “Evan hasn’t seen it.
