Now I wondered whether the person texting me knew something Claire had kept from me too.
I sent back one question: Who are you?
Three dots appeared, vanished, then appeared again.
I worked with your father. Meet me at the diner across from the old storage facility. Come alone.
I took a screenshot and sent it, along with my location, to my friend Marcus. Then I called him.
“If I don’t call you in thirty minutes, call me,” I said.
“What happened?”
“I found something about my dad.”
That was enough to make him stop joking. “I’ve got you.”
The diner was nearly empty when I arrived. A woman with gray hair sat in the back booth, turning a coffee cup between her hands. She looked up before I reached her.
“You have his eyes,” she said.

I stayed standing. “Who are you?”
“Ruth Ellis. Your father and I worked at the county records office.”
I slid into the booth but kept my phone on the table. “You sent the texts?”
She nodded. “I heard someone was asking about Daniel’s storage unit. Then Claire called me.”
“You know Claire?”
“We met when Daniel went missing. She spent months looking for him.”
“Then why tell me not to bring her?”
Ruth gripped her cup. “Because your mother will talk if you show up alone. If she sees Claire, she’ll shut the door.”
“You could have said that in a text.”
“I wasn’t sure you’d come.”
I leaned forward. “What was in the ledger?”

“Payments from a county housing fund. Daniel noticed that money meant for repairs was being sent to a company that had never done the work. He copied the payment records into a blue ledger because files kept disappearing from the office.”
“Was my mother involved?”
Ruth’s gaze dropped. “She worked for the company receiving the payments.”
For a moment, the noise of the diner seemed to fade.
“My father said she found out he was investigating,” I said.
“Yes. But there’s something else you need to see.”
Ruth opened a worn folder and pushed a photocopy across the table. It was the first page of a police report, dated the morning after my father’s letter. His name appeared beneath the words Reporting Party. Listed below it was a description of the ledger and several copied records.
“He really went to the police,” I whispered.
“He did. I went with him.”
I looked up sharply. “You saw him that day?”

“He handed over the copies. An officer told us a detective would be in touch. Daniel left the station ahead of me.” Her voice thinned. “That was the last time I saw him.”
“Why didn’t you tell me any of this?”
“I tried, years ago. Your mother said you were a child and asked me to let you have a normal life. Later, I didn’t know where you were.”
I studied the report. A detective’s name had been stamped at the bottom, but the case number was crossed out in pen.
“Did anyone investigate?”
“Not that I could prove. The report vanished from the files. I’d made a copy because Daniel asked me to keep one.”
I took a photo of every page in her folder. There were payment records, a list of addresses, and one sheet bearing my mother’s signature. Ruth didn’t try to tell me what the signature meant. I was grateful for that.
“What happened to the storage unit?” I asked.
“Daniel kept the originals there. Someone moved them after he disappeared, but I never learned who.”
My phone rang. The old storage company was calling back.

The woman had found the transfer paperwork. “The contents went to a facility on Briar Road,” she said. “The person who requested the move signed the form in person.”
I braced myself. “What name?”
“Claire Bennett.”
Across the table, Ruth watched my face change.
Claire had told me she’d never seen the receipt. She’d said she didn’t know the unit had been moved.
I thanked the woman and hung up.
“Claire moved it,” I said.
Ruth closed her eyes. “Then you need to ask her why.”
I gathered the papers and walked outside. Before I could call Claire, a new text appeared from her.
Ethan, your mother just came to my house. She knows about the box. Please don’t come here.
I called. Claire answered on the first ring, breathing hard.
“Are you safe?” I asked.
“Yes. I’m in my car. I left when she started searching the bedroom.”
I glanced down at the transfer form on my phone. “Did you move Dad’s things to Briar Road?”
Silence.
“Claire.”
“Yes,” she said. “I moved them years ago.”
“You looked me in the face and said you didn’t know where they were.”
“I know. I was going to tell you.”
“Tell me now.”
“The ledger is there. So are letters Daniel wrote after he disappeared.”
My hand went cold around the phone.
“After?” I asked.
Claire’s voice broke. “Ethan, your father was alive for years after that day.”…………………..

Click Here to continuous Read Full Ending Story👉:PART 5 — THE LAST LETTER

I stared at the warning on my phone.
