I was standing beside a picnic table at the county fair, holding a blue balloon. I remembered that day because my mother had bought me a second balloon after the first one flew away.<br \/>\nI did not remember the woman standing behind me.<br \/>\nClaire.<br \/>\nThe bedroom door opened.<br \/>\n\u201cWell?\u201d she said, stepping into the living room in the emerald dress. \u201cWas it worth all that saving?\u201d<br \/>\nShe smiled until she saw my face. I\u2019d spent six months believing I knew what her silences meant. Now I couldn\u2019t read her at all.<br \/>\n\u201cDaniel and I were friends,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cFriends who took pictures of his son?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat day at the fair was the last time I saw either of you.\u201d<br \/>\nI remembered my mother telling me Dad had left us a few weeks before my ninth birthday. For years, every unanswered question about him had felt like a door nobody would let me open.<br \/>\n\u201cYou recognized me on Tinder,\u201d I said.<br \/>\nClaire\u2019s eyes filled. \u201cYour name. That\u2019s the truth. But he loved you, Ethan. He talked about you constantly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to believe her. That made me angrier.<br \/>\n\u201cYou knew I spent my whole life thinking he walked away,\u201d I said. \u201cYou let me talk about that. You held me while I cried about it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI know.\u201d Her voice broke. \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhy keep the photo?\u201d<br \/>\nClaire glanced toward the hallway. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t the only thing Daniel left with me.\u201d<br \/>\nShe rose and went to the bedroom. I heard a drawer slide open, then another. When she returned, she carried a small metal box with scratches across its lid.<br \/>\n\u201cI should have shown you this the day I knew it was you.\u201d<br \/>\nShe placed it on the table and opened it. Inside were a key, an unopened envelope, and a child\u2019s drawing of two stick figures holding blue balloons.<br \/>\nMy drawing.<br \/>\nMy father\u2019s name was written on the envelope.<br \/>\nClaire slid it toward me without touching my hand.<br \/>\n\u201cHe asked me to give you this if I ever found you,\u201d she said. \u201cI never opened it.\u201d<br \/>\nAcross the front, in handwriting I recognized from old birthday cards, my father had written:<br \/>\n<em>For Ethan, when he\u2019s old enough to decide for himself.<\/em><br \/>\nI picked it up.
