I thought I was protecting you, but I was wrong.\u201d<br \/>\nUnlike Ryan, he didn\u2019t blame me.<br \/>\nHe didn\u2019t make excuses.<br \/>\nHe simply admitted the truth.<br \/>\nOfficer Daniels handed me a set of car keys.<br \/>\n\u201cWe have less than an hour.\u201d<br \/>\nThey placed a child-sized mannequin beneath a blanket in the rear seat of an unmarked minivan.<br \/>\nFrom a distance, it would look like Emma was curled up asleep.<br \/>\nPolice vehicles left the school one by one, taking different routes to the bridge.<br \/>\nI was supposed to drive alone.<br \/>\nTravis climbed into the passenger seat.<br \/>\n\u201cNo,\u201d Daniels said. \u201cRyan specifically asked for Melissa.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe\u2019ll expect her to bring someone for protection.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe may shoot you on sight.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe already tried to frame me for kidnapping Emma. Rust covered its rails, and weeds split the cracked road leading toward the river.<br \/>\nRyan had moved the patrol car beneath the center span where the trees concealed it from the highway.<br \/>\nHe stood beside my mother with one arm locked around her neck.<br \/>\nA gun pressed against her ribs.<br \/>\nI stopped the minivan fifty feet away.<br \/>\nTravis remained low in the passenger seat where Ryan couldn\u2019t see him.<br \/>\n\u201cGet out!\u201d Ryan shouted.<br \/>\nI stepped onto the broken pavement and raised both hands.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere\u2019s Emma?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIn the back seat.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBring her to me.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe\u2019s terrified. Let Mom go first.\u201d<br \/>\nRyan laughed.<br \/>\n\u201cYou don\u2019t get to negotiate.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou need the bank forms. I don\u2019t have them.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou don\u2019t need them. Evelyn does.\u201d<br \/>\nMy mother shook her head violently.<br \/>\nRyan pushed the gun harder into her side.<br \/>\n\u201cTell her.\u201d<br \/>\nI slowly approached.<br \/>\n\u201cTell me what?\u201d<br \/>\nHe ripped the tape from my mother\u2019s mouth.<br \/>\nShe gasped in pain.<br \/>\n\u201cMelissa, don\u2019t give him anything.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does he want?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe trust.\u201d<br \/>\nRyan struck the side of her head with the gun.<br \/>\nI screamed.<br \/>\n\u201cStop!\u201d<br \/>\nMy mother almost fell, but he caught her arm and dragged her upright.<br \/>\n\u201cExplain it,\u201d he ordered.<br \/>\nShe looked at me, tears running down her face.<br \/>\n\u201cAfter your father died, I placed the money from the company into a family trust.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI know.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo, you don\u2019t know everything. I made you the primary beneficiary.\u201d<br \/>\nRyan\u2019s breathing quickened.<br \/>\n\u201cAnd if anything happened to you,\u201d she continued, \u201cthe money would pass directly to Emma.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at Ryan.<br \/>\nHe wasn\u2019t planning only to steal a ransom.<br \/>\nHe had known about the trust.<br \/>\n\u201cYou said the documents were private,\u201d I whispered.<br \/>\n\u201cThey were,\u201d my mother replied. \u201cSomeone broke into my office six months ago. Nothing appeared missing, but copies must have been taken.\u201d<br \/>\nRyan smiled.<br \/>\n\u201cFour hundred and eighty thousand dollars was only the beginning. Once your mother signs the authorization and you\u2019re gone, I become Emma\u2019s surviving parent. I control everything until she turns eighteen.\u201d<br \/>\nThe photograph of me sleeping flashed through my mind.<br \/>\nThe words on the back finally made sense.<br \/>\nONCE THE GIRL IS GONE.<br \/>\nThe kidnapping was never the end of his plan.<br \/>\nIt was meant to remove Emma temporarily, draw money from my mother, and give Ryan an excuse to kill me.<br \/>\nThen he would \u201crescue\u201d Emma, become her sole guardian, and gain control of the trust.<br \/>\n\u201cYou were going to kill me,\u201d I said.<br \/>\n\u201cIt was supposed to look like you took your own life.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause I couldn\u2019t live with losing Emma?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat was the story.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd Travis?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe police were supposed to find Emma\u2019s backpack in his garage. Everyone would believe the dangerous biker kidnapped her.\u201d<br \/>\nA shadow shifted in the minivan.<br \/>\nTravis had heard enough.<br \/>\nI touched the transmitter under my blouse.<br \/>\nOfficer Daniels\u2019s voice whispered through the tiny receiver in my ear.<br \/>\n\u201cKeep him talking.
