Blood streaked one side of his face, and his right hand was wrapped in a towel already turning red.<br \/>\nEmma sat beside him, clutching his uninjured arm.<br \/>\nAcross the room stood a police officer.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat happened?\u201d I gasped, rushing toward my daughter.<br \/>\nEmma jumped up and wrapped both arms around my waist.<br \/>\n\u201cMommy!\u201d<br \/>\nI dropped to my knees and checked her face, arms, and legs.<br \/>\n\u201cAre you hurt? You did exactly what you were supposed to do.\u201d<br \/>\nA paramedic entered the office and examined Travis\u2019s hand.<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019ll need stitches,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019re bleeding on the principal\u2019s carpet.\u201d<br \/>\nFor the first time since I arrived, Principal Howard almost smiled.<br \/>\n\u201cPlease go with her, Mr. Cole. Until we know who they are, be careful.\u201d<br \/>\nTravis nodded.<br \/>\nThen he glanced at me.<br \/>\n\u201cCall Ryan. Tell him to come here.\u201d<br \/>\nI reached for my phone.<br \/>\nThere were six missed calls from my husband.<br \/>\nBefore I could call back, another message appeared.<br \/>\nRYAN: Where are you? You said yourself that he always appears whenever you need help.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked through the office window.<br \/>\nTravis sat in the hallway while the paramedic cleaned his wounds.<br \/>\nEmma had drawn him a picture and was holding it against the glass so he could see it.<br \/>\nHe smiled at her despite his split lip.<br \/>\nRyan continued speaking.<br \/>\n\u201cTake Emma home. I\u2019ll handle everything.\u201d<br \/>\nOfficer Daniels stepped closer and silently held out his hand for my phone.<br \/>\nBefore I could give it to him, Ryan said something that made the officer stop.<br \/>\n\u201cAnd don\u2019t let them look inside the phone those men dropped.\u201d<br \/>\nI felt the blood drain from my face.<br \/>\nI hadn\u2019t told Ryan about the phone.<br \/>\nNo one had.<br \/>\n\u201cHow do you know they dropped a phone?\u201d I whispered.<br \/>\nSilence.<br \/>\nThen the call ended.<br \/>\nOfficer Daniels took my phone and immediately spoke into his radio.<br \/>\n\u201cSend a unit to the Bennett residence.
