He brought you the message. Most importantly, he brought you here.\u201d<br \/>\nTyler\u2019s frightened eyes found mine.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Mom.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo,\u201d I said quickly. \u201cYou have nothing to be sorry for.\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel stepped beneath the metal walkway.<br \/>\n\u201cYou promised you wouldn\u2019t hurt him.\u201d<br \/>\nHarris laughed.<br \/>\n\u201cYou don\u2019t get to talk about promises. You\u2019ve spent three years hiding from your own child.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI stayed away to keep him alive.\u201d<br \/>\nTyler stared down at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel looked at me.<br \/>\n\u201cLaura, you need to tell him about Rachel.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI already did.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNot the story you were given. I\u2019ll take him upstairs. When I returned, child services had already taken him.\u201d<br \/>\nI wanted to scream at him.<br \/>\nI wanted to tell him that no apology could erase what I had found in that apartment.<br \/>\nBut Tyler was coming down the stairs, and I refused to let him hear more.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy did you fake your death?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cRachel kept copies of the altered records. Before Harris killed her, she hid them. For years, he believed I had them. Every officer, judge, doctor, and attorney who helped them.\u201d<br \/>\nFootsteps rang above us.<br \/>\nHarris appeared at the top of the stairs.<br \/>\nHis wrist was bleeding where Tyler had bitten him, but he held a second gun.<br \/>\n\u201cNow we\u2019re finally getting somewhere,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nDaniel pushed me behind a concrete pillar.<br \/>\nThe bullet struck the floor inches from his leg.<br \/>\nMr. Lewis lifted the tire iron.<br \/>\nHarris fired again.<br \/>\nMr. Lewis dropped behind the mattress with the children.<br \/>\n\u201cWe can\u2019t reach the green door!\u201d Emily shouted.<br \/>\nFlames now blocked the entrance.<br \/>\nThe only other exit was a dark tunnel beneath the walkway.<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s where they took the children,\u201d the rescued girl said.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d I asked.<br \/>\n\u201cSophie.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSophie, can you lead us through it?\u201d<br \/>\nShe nodded.<br \/>\n\u201cThere\u2019s a train car on the other side.\u201d<br \/>\nMr. Lewis took Emily and Sophie toward the tunnel.<br \/>\nTyler refused to move.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m not leaving my mom.\u201d<br \/>\nI grabbed his shoulders.<br \/>\n\u201cYou are going with Mr. Lewis.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo!\u201d<br \/>\nHarris fired again.<br \/>\nConcrete exploded beside my face.<br \/>\nDaniel picked up a broken length of pipe and hurled it toward the walkway.<br \/>\nHarris ducked.<br \/>\n\u201cGo!\u201d Daniel yelled.<br \/>\nI pushed Tyler into Mr. Lewis\u2019s arms.<br \/>\n\u201cTake him!\u201d<br \/>\nMr. Lewis pulled Tyler toward the tunnel as he kicked and screamed my name.<br \/>\nHarris ran down the stairs.<br \/>\nDaniel met him at the bottom.<br \/>\nThey slammed into each other, crashing against a steel support.<br \/>\nI searched beneath the mattress for the fallen gun.<br \/>\nMy fingers closed around the grip.<br \/>\nI raised it.<br \/>\nHarris twisted Daniel in front of him.<br \/>\n\u201cDrop it, Laura.\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel\u2019s back pressed against Harris\u2019s chest.<br \/>\nThe detective held his gun beneath Daniel\u2019s jaw.<br \/>\n\u201cYou won\u2019t shoot your brother.\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel looked at me.<br \/>\n\u201cYes, she will.\u201d<br \/>\nHis words stunned both of us.<br \/>\n\u201cDo it,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou have to.\u201d<br \/>\nHarris dragged him backward toward the tunnel.<br \/>\n\u201cPut the gun down, or I\u2019ll kill him.\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel stared into my eyes.<br \/>\n\u201cI abandoned my son. I helped this man destroy families. Don\u2019t let my mistakes take Tyler\u2019s mother too.\u201d<br \/>\nMy finger tightened around the trigger.<br \/>\nThen a voice echoed from the darkness behind Harris.<br \/>\n\u201cLet him go.\u201d<br \/>\nTyler stood at the tunnel entrance holding the black prepaid phone.<br \/>\nMr. Lewis was beside him, filming everything.<br \/>\nHarris laughed.<br \/>\n\u201cYou think a video will save you?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo,\u201d Tyler said. \u201cBut the people watching it might.\u201d<br \/>\nHe turned the screen toward us.<br \/>\nThe phone showed a live broadcast.<br \/>\nMore than six thousand people were watching.<br \/>\nComments raced across the screen.<br \/>\nMr. Lewis had connected the phone to the barbershop\u2019s social media account.<br \/>\nThe entire conversation had been streaming since we entered the depot.<br \/>\nHarris\u2019s face drained of color.<br \/>\n\u201cYou little\u2014\u201d<br \/>\nHe released Daniel and pointed his gun at Tyler.<br \/>\nI fired.<br \/>\nThe bullet struck Harris in the leg.<br \/>\nHe collapsed with a scream.<br \/>\nDaniel kicked the gun away.<br \/>\nMr. Lewis rushed forward and pinned the detective with the tire iron across his chest.<br \/>\nFrom somewhere beyond the tunnel came the sound of sirens.<br \/>\nReal sirens.<br \/>\nDozens of viewers had called state police after hearing the livestream.<br \/>\nWithin minutes, officers stormed the depot from both sides.<br \/>\nFirefighters rushed in behind them.<br \/>\nThey carried Harris outside in handcuffs and took Daniel to an ambulance.<br \/>\nState troopers entered the tunnel and returned with three terrified children who had been locked inside a freight car.<br \/>\nEmily\u2019s parents arrived moments later.<br \/>\nHer mother fell to her knees in the mud and wrapped both arms around her.<br \/>\nI stood beside the ambulance holding Tyler so tightly that he finally whispered, \u201cMom, I can\u2019t breathe.\u201d<br \/>\nI loosened my grip.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<br \/>\nHe touched the unfinished side of his hair.<br \/>\n\u201cCan Mr. Lewis fix this now?\u201d<br \/>\nA laugh escaped me, half relief and half tears.<br \/>\nThen Daniel called my name.<br \/>\nHe lay on a stretcher, pale but conscious.<br \/>\nA paramedic pressed gauze against his shoulder.<br \/>\n\u201cI need you to listen,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cHarris wasn\u2019t working alone. The list will prove it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ll give the box to the state police.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\nHis hand closed around mine.<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t trust anyone until you read it yourself.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhy?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause the person at the top of that list knows Harris has been caught. They\u2019ll come for the evidence before morning.\u201d<br \/>\nI thought about the blue box sitting on the top shelf of my bedroom closet.<br \/>\nNo one else knew it existed.<br \/>\nAt least, that was what I believed.<br \/>\nThen my phone rang.<br \/>\nIt was my neighbor, Mrs. Patterson.<br \/>\n\u201cLaura,\u201d she said breathlessly, \u201cyour front door is open. There are two black cars in your driveway.\u201d<br \/>\nMy heart stopped.<br \/>\n\u201cAre they police?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t think so.
