Half of his hair had already been trimmed. Mr. Lewis stood behind him, guiding the clippers carefully around his ear.
Through the front window, a blue pickup truck was visible across the street.
A moment later, a small figure appeared behind it.

Emily.
She wore the yellow jacket I had seen her wearing at the bus stop the previous afternoon.
Her hair was tangled, and there was dirt across one side of her face.
She stared directly through the barbershop window.
Then she raised the folded note.
I pressed one hand against my mouth.
On the screen, Tyler ripped off the barber cape and raced toward the door.
The camera angle changed as Mr. Lewis followed him outside.
Emily ran toward Tyler and shoved the note into his hand.
Then the driver’s door of the blue truck opened.
A tall man stepped out.
The security camera did not capture his face clearly because he wore a dark baseball cap pulled low over his eyes.
But Tyler was right.
I knew him.
Even from behind, I recognized the slight limp in his left leg.
I recognized the brown leather jacket.
Most of all, I recognized the silver watch on his wrist.
It was the watch I had bought my older brother, Daniel, for his fortieth birthday.
Daniel had been missing for almost three years.
The police believed he had driven his car into the river after leaving a handwritten goodbye letter on the front seat.
His body had never been found.
Yet there he was on the screen, reaching for my eight-year-old son.
“That’s Uncle Daniel,” Tyler whispered.
My knees nearly gave out.
On the recording, Daniel grabbed Tyler by the arm.
But Tyler twisted free and did something I never expected.
Instead of running back to the barbershop, he stepped between Daniel and Emily.
“Run!” Tyler screamed at her.
Emily sprinted toward the alley.
Daniel started after her, but Tyler kicked the truck door as hard as he could, setting off its alarm.
People inside the bakery next door rushed to the window.
Mr. Lewis charged across the street with a broom raised over his head.
Daniel jumped back into the truck and sped away.
Emily disappeared into the alley.
Mr. Lewis paused the footage.
“That’s why I couldn’t finish his haircut,” he said, wiping his eyes. “Your boy stood in front of a grown man to protect that little girl. You convinced everyone I was dead. You took the house. You took Mom’s insurance money. You even took my son.”
I stared at the screen, unable to understand what I was hearing.
I had never taken any insurance money.
And Daniel didn’t have a son.
At least, that was what I had always believed.
Then he held a photograph up to the camera.
It showed a little boy standing beside him.
The boy looked about four years old.
He had Daniel’s dark eyes.
But he also had a birthmark shaped like a crescent moon beneath his left ear.
The same birthmark Tyler had.
I slowly turned toward my son.
Tyler touched the mark beneath his ear, his face filled with confusion.
Daniel lowered the photograph and stared into the camera.
“Tell Tyler the truth,” he said. “Tell him why every document from the first eleven months of his life is missing.
