What is ridiculous is a fifty-one-year-old man pounding on his mother\u2019s door because she stopped paying for his country club.\u201d<br \/>\nHis cheeks turned dark red.<br \/>\n\u201cThat club is where I meet clients.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe preschool must be where you meet clients too.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s your granddaughter\u2019s education!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd I was happy to help until you decided I was too embarrassing to sit at her dinner table.\u201d<br \/>\nGenevieve leaned toward the opening.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is exactly what we were worried about. You\u2019re behaving vindictively.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI am behaving independently. I realize that must look frightening from where you\u2019re standing.\u201d<br \/>\nBenjamin shoved one hand into his coat pocket and pulled out a folded document.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need you to sign a temporary authorization.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked down at the paper.<br \/>\n\u201cAuthorization for what?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSo I can manage the accounts until we get this sorted out.\u201d<br \/>\nMy fingers tightened around the door.<br \/>\nHe had come prepared.<br \/>\nBefore sunrise, while I was sitting across from Clara canceling his payments, my son had been preparing to take control of what remained.<br \/>\n\u201cDid Malcolm write a letter saying I was incompetent?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo one said you were incompetent.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen why is he here?\u201d<br \/>\nBenjamin looked past me into the house as though searching for evidence that I had left the stove burning.<br \/>\n\u201cBecause this isn\u2019t like you.\u201d<br \/>\nHe was right about that.<br \/>\nThe woman he knew would have opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She would have apologized for upsetting him.<br \/>\nShe would have restored every payment before lunch and spent the rest of the day wondering how to make Genevieve forgive her.<br \/>\nThat woman had disappeared at 6:18 the previous evening.<br \/>\n\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cIt isn\u2019t like me.\u201d<br \/>\nRelief flickered across his face.<br \/>\n\u201cGood.
