photograph.
Even from that distance, I recognized the woman in it.
My mother.
Beside her stood Richard.
And between them was a little girl.
Me.
Charles placed the photograph against the windshield.
Then he drove away.
The police arrived less than a minute later.
Daniel explained the restraining order.
They searched the />
On the back, someone had written:
SUMMER 1992.
MY FAMILY.
I stared at those two words.
My family.
“That doesn’t make sense,” I whispered.<br turned toward him.
“You met him again when you were thirty-five.”
The room went silent.
“You knew?”
“Not until after Richard died.”
Daniel reached into his briefcase.
“There were documents I was instructed to open only after his death.”
He removed another envelope.
“Richard knew you might start remembering.”
I could barely breathe.
“What happened to me?”
“I think the answer is downstairs.”
I looked at the brass key.
An hour later, after the police left and Emily was safely upstairs with Mrs. Patterson, our longtime neighbor, Daniel and I walked toward the west wing.
Richard’s private library occupied most of that side of the house.
I had cleaned it hundreds of times.
Books covered every wall.
Daniel walked directly toward an enormous wooden bookcase.
“There.”
“There what?”
He pointed toward a small brass plate near the floor.
I had seen it before.
I always thought it was decorative.
Daniel inserted the key.
Click.
Something moved inside the wall.
The entire bookcase shifted forward.
I stepped back.
Behind it was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.
For five years, I had lived above this.
For five years, Richard had rolled his wheelchair past this wall while I pushed him.
And he had never said a word.
Daniel switched on his phone flashlight.
“You don’t have to do this tonight.”
“Yes, I do.”
We descended.
Twelve steps.
Then sixteen.
Then twenty.
At the bottom was a steel door.
The brass key opened that too.
The air inside smelled stale.
Daniel found a light switch.
The lights flickered on.
And I stopped breathing.
It wasn’t a storage room.
It was an archive.
Metal filing cabinets lined the walls.
Boxes were stacked from floor to ceiling.
Photographs covered one entire board.
Most were photographs of my mother.
Some showed Richard.
Some showed Charles.
And dozens showed me.
Me at four.
Me at five.
Me at six.
Then there was nothing.
The photographs stopped immediately after my mother died.
On a desk sat an old cassette recorder.
Beside it was another envelope.
CLAIRE — LISTEN BEFORE YOU OPEN ANYTHING ELSE.
I recognized Richard’s handwriting.
Daniel stepped backward.
“This is for you.”
I sat down.
My hands were shaking so badly I almost dropped the cassette.
I pushed it into the recorder.
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then Richard’s voice filled the room.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably his.
“Claire, if you’re hearing this, then I’m dead.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“And if Daniel followed my instructions, Charles Vance has probably already found you.”
I looked at Daniel.
Neither of us spoke.
Richard continued.
“There are three things you need to know before you open the files.”
Static crackled.
“The first is that Charles will tell you I caused your mother’s death.”
I gripped the edge of the desk.
“He will have evidence that makes it look true.”
Daniel moved closer to the recorder.
“The second is that some of that evidence is real.”
My heart pounded.
“And the third…”
Richard stopped.
I heard him breathing.
When he spoke again, his voice was breaking.
“The third is something I should have told you the moment you walked back into my life.”
A long silence followed.
“I knew your mother long before you were born, Claire.”
I leaned closer.
“I loved her.”
My throat tightened.
“But that isn’t the secret.”
Another pause.
“The secret is why she came to work for me.”
I stared at the photographs.
“She wasn’t my employee.”
Static.
“She was investigating Charles.”
Daniel whispered, “What?”
Richard continued.
“And the night she died, she gave me something Charles had spent years trying to find.”
I looked around the room.
The files.
The boxes.
The photographs.
Was it here?
Richard’s voice dropped.
“I hid it where Charles could never reach it.”
Then he said:
“Claire, look beneath the desk.”
I slowly bent down.
There was a small metal box attached underneath.
I pulled it free.
Inside was a key card and a folded note.
The note contained only four words.
SAFE DEPOSIT BOX 317.
Daniel stared at it.
“What bank?”
I turned the paper over.
An address was written on the back.
Daniel went pale.
“What?”
“That bank
