Where exactly would you prefer?\u201d<br \/>\nHis jaw flexed.<br \/>\n\u201cInside.\u201d<br \/>\nRebecca spoke before I could answer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything relevant to financial assets or liabilities should probably be discussed with counsel present.\u201d<br \/>\nTravis snapped toward her.<br \/>\n\u201cI wasn\u2019t talking to you.\u201d<br \/>\nCaleb moved forward.<br \/>\n\u201cWatch your mouth.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cCaleb.\u201d<br \/>\nI lifted my hand.<br \/>\nMy brother stopped.<br \/>\nTravis looked exhausted, but underneath the exhaustion was something I had never seen in him before.<br \/>\nFear.<br \/>\nNot fear of losing me.<br \/>\nNot fear of losing the house.<br \/>\nFear of something else.<br \/>\nI opened the storm door.<br \/>\n\u201cFine. Kitchen. Rebecca stays.\u201d<br \/>\nTravis hesitated.<br \/>\nThen he picked up his duffel and followed us inside.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He stopped in the kitchen.<br \/>\nHis eyes immediately went to the countertop.<br \/>\nNormally, whenever he came home from offshore, there was food waiting.<br \/>\nFresh coffee.<br \/>\nHis favorite gumbo.<br \/>\nClean towels upstairs.<br \/>\nEverything arranged exactly the way he liked it.<br \/>\nToday there was nothing.<br \/>\nJust four chairs around the kitchen table and a folder Rebecca placed in front of her.<br \/>\nTravis slowly sat down.<br \/>\nI remained standing.<br \/>\n\u201cStart talking.\u201d<br \/>\nHe rubbed both hands over his face.<br \/>\n\u201cHale Coastal Holdings isn\u2019t what you think.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know what it is, so that\u2019s not much of an explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was supposed to be an investment company.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSupposed to be?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cA side business.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWith Eric?\u201d<br \/>\nHis eyes flicked toward me.<br \/>\n\u201cHow do you know about Eric?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe registered address is his house.\u201d<br \/>\nTravis looked at Rebecca again.<br \/>\n\u201cYou&#8217;ve been digging.\u201d<br \/>\nRebecca remained calm.<br \/>\n\u201cYour wife is entitled to understand the financial circumstances affecting her marriage.\u201d<br \/>\nHe laughed bitterly.<br \/>\n\u201cYou people have no idea what you\u2019re messing with.\u201d<br \/>\nMy stomach tightened.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNothing.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen explain the sixty-two thousand.\u201d<br \/>\nHe stared at the table.<br \/>\nFinally, he said, \u201cEric and I were buying equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat equipment?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMarine equipment.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cPumps. Generators. Welding machines. Stuff contractors use.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd where is it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe resold most of it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhere\u2019s the money?\u201d<br \/>\nSilence.<br \/>\n\u201cTravis.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt got complicated.\u201d<br \/>\nThat phrase made Rebecca sit forward.<br \/>\n\u201cHow?\u201d<br \/>\nTravis looked at her.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m not discussing business details with you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen you should obtain your own attorney before discussing them with anyone.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI don&#8217;t need an attorney.\u201d<br \/>\nRebecca closed her folder.<br \/>\n\u201cThat is your decision.\u201d<br \/>\nTravis turned back to me.<br \/>\n\u201cJune, I need you to understand something. The money I moved wasn&#8217;t because I was trying to steal from you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen why hide it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause you wouldn\u2019t understand.\u201d<br \/>\nThere it was again.<br \/>\nThe sentence that had built our marriage.<br \/>\nYou wouldn\u2019t understand.<br \/>\nI almost smiled.<br \/>\n\u201cTry me.\u201d<br \/>\nHe exhaled sharply.<br \/>\n\u201cEric knew a guy named Mason Bell.\u201d<br \/>\nI waited.<br \/>\n\u201cHe runs a marine supply business near Cameron.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does that have to do with us?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe had access to equipment coming out of company liquidations. We could buy it cheap and resell it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWith whose money?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMine.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOur money.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMy bonuses.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMoney earned during our marriage.\u201d<br \/>\nHis face hardened.<br \/>\n\u201cSee? This is exactly why I never told you.\u201d<br \/>\nI stared at him.<br \/>\n\u201cYou hid tens of thousands of dollars because you knew I would ask questions?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI was trying to build something.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cFor who?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cFor us.\u201d<br \/>\nI laughed.<br \/>\nI couldn\u2019t help it.<br \/>\n\u201cFor us?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou removed me from the bank accounts.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause I needed liquidity.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou were going to give me a five-hundred-dollar spending card.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat had nothing to do with this.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt had everything to do with this.\u201d<br \/>\nHe pushed his chair backward.<br \/>\n\u201cFine. You want the truth? I was tired of asking permission to use money I earned.\u201d<br \/>\nI stared at him.<br \/>\n\u201cYou never asked my permission for anything.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou always had an opinion.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m your wife.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd I was the one working three weeks offshore.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd I was the one keeping everything here alive while you were gone.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s not the same.\u201d<br \/>\nThose four words killed something in me.<br \/>\nNine years.<br \/>\nHurricanes.<br \/>\nBroken fences.<br \/>\nContractors.<br \/>\nInsurance adjusters.<br \/>\nTax offices.<br \/>\nMowing eleven acres in Louisiana heat.<br \/>\nDriving him back and forth.<br \/>\nCooking.<br \/>\nCleaning.<br \/>\nScheduling.<br \/>\nRepairing.<br \/>\nWaiting.<br \/>\nApparently none of it counted because nobody deposited a paycheck with my name on it.<br \/>\nI pulled out the chair across from him.<br \/>\nThen I sat.<br \/>\n\u201cTell me about the money that wasn\u2019t yours.\u201d<br \/>\nHis expression changed again.<br \/>\n\u201cI already told you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo, you didn\u2019t.\u201d<br \/>\nHe looked at Rebecca.<br \/>\nThen Caleb.<br \/>\nThen me.<br \/>\nFinally, he said, \u201cMason put money into the company.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHow much?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cTwenty-five thousand.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd Eric put in fifteen.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s forty.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI put in the rest.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen why did you say some of the sixty-two thousand wasn\u2019t yours?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause some of it was investment money.\u201d<br \/>\nRebecca spoke quietly.<br \/>\n\u201cDo you have written agreements documenting those investments?\u201d<br \/>\nTravis said nothing.<br \/>\n\u201cContracts?\u201d<br \/>\nNothing.<br \/>\n\u201cOperating agreement?\u201d<br \/>\nHis eyes narrowed.<br \/>\n\u201cWe had an understanding.\u201d<br \/>\nRebecca wrote something on her legal pad.<br \/>\nThat seemed to make him nervous.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat are you writing?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNotes.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cStop.\u201d<br \/>\nShe looked up.<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\nTravis stood.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m done.\u201d<br \/>\nHe grabbed his duffel.<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t stop him.<br \/>\nHe marched toward the stairs.<br \/>\nThen Rebecca said, \u201cJune.\u201d<br \/>\nSomething in her voice made me turn.<br \/>\nShe was looking at Travis\u2019s bag.<br \/>\n\u201cBefore any property or records are removed, you may want to photograph what he\u2019s taking, consistent with whatever your counsel advises.\u201d<br \/>\nTravis spun around.<br \/>\n\u201cYou think I\u2019m stealing?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI didn\u2019t say that.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThis is insane.\u201d<br \/>\nI stood.<br \/>\n\u201cOpen the bag.\u201d<br \/>\nHis face went still.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019ve been offshore for twenty-one days. It should contain clothes, toiletries, and whatever you took with you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cJune.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOpen it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\nThat one word changed the temperature in the room.<br \/>\nCaleb stepped toward him.<br \/>\nTravis gripped the strap.<br \/>\nI stared at the bag.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy won\u2019t you open it?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause I don\u2019t have to prove anything to you.\u201d<br \/>\nThen I noticed something.<br \/>\nWhen Travis left for offshore three weeks earlier, that duffel had been half empty.<br \/>\nNow the sides bulged.<br \/>\nAnd he was holding it like it weighed far more than dirty clothes should.<br \/>\nRebecca must have noticed too.<br \/>\n\u201cMr. Hale,\u201d she said, \u201cnobody here is going to physically search your belongings. But given the current dispute, removing records or disputed property could create additional issues. You should speak with your own counsel.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI said I\u2019m done.\u201d<br \/>\nHe walked toward the front door.<br \/>\nI followed.<br \/>\n\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cEric\u2019s.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWith the bag?\u201d<br \/>\nHe stopped.<br \/>\nThen he turned.<br \/>\n\u201cMove.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cJune.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat\u2019s inside?\u201d<br \/>\nHis eyes locked on mine.<br \/>\n\u201cMove.\u201d<br \/>\nCaleb came up behind me.<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t talk to her like that.\u201d<br \/>\nTravis looked from Caleb to Rebecca.<br \/>\nThen he dropped the duffel.<br \/>\nHard.<br \/>\nSomething metallic struck the floor inside.<br \/>\nClunk.<br \/>\nNobody spoke.<br \/>\nTravis looked down.<br \/>\nSo did I.<br \/>\nThen his phone rang.<br \/>\nHe pulled it from his pocket.<br \/>\nOne glance at the screen.<br \/>\nAnd every bit of color disappeared from his face.<br \/>\nHe rejected the call.<br \/>\nFive seconds later, it rang again.<br \/>\nSame number.<br \/>\nHe rejected it.<br \/>\nThen a text appeared.<br \/>\nI couldn\u2019t read all of it from where I stood.<br \/>\nBut I saw the first three words.<br \/>\nWHERE IS IT?<br \/>\nTravis shoved the phone into his pocket.<br \/>\n\u201cWho\u2019s that?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNobody.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDoesn\u2019t look like nobody.\u201d<br \/>\nHe grabbed his bag again.<br \/>\nI stepped aside.<br \/>\nNot because he ordered me to.<br \/>\nBecause suddenly I wanted him out of the house.<br \/>\n\u201cGo.\u201d<br \/>\nHe looked surprised.<br \/>\n\u201cGo wherever you\u2019re going. But from now on, communication about the divorce goes through the proper channels.\u201d<br \/>\nHe stared at me for several seconds.<br \/>\nThen walked outside.<br \/>\nCaleb followed him onto the porch.<br \/>\nRebecca touched my arm.<br \/>\n\u201cLet him leave.\u201d<br \/>\nI nodded.<br \/>\nWe watched Travis throw the duffel into his truck.<br \/>\nHe climbed behind the wheel.<br \/>\nThen he looked toward me.<br \/>\nThere was something almost desperate in his expression.<br \/>\nHe lowered the window.<br \/>\n\u201cJune.\u201d<br \/>\nI said nothing.<br \/>\n\u201cIf anybody comes here asking about me, don\u2019t tell them anything.\u201d<br \/>\nMy stomach dropped.<br \/>\n\u201cWho would come here?\u201d<br \/>\nHe started the engine.<br \/>\n\u201cJust don\u2019t.\u201d<br \/>\nThen he drove away.<br \/>\nFor nearly a minute, none of us spoke.<br \/>\nFinally, Caleb said exactly what I was thinking.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat the hell has he gotten himself into?\u201d<br \/>\nRebecca looked at me.<br \/>\n\u201cWe don\u2019t know. And until we do, don\u2019t speculate and don\u2019t confront anyone connected to this company yourself.\u201d<br \/>\nI nodded.<br \/>\nThat afternoon, I changed the alarm code to one only I knew, after confirming what I could lawfully change.<br \/>\nCaleb stayed at the house.<br \/>\nI barely slept.<br \/>\nEvery sound woke me.<br \/>\nEvery pair of headlights passing on the county road made my heart race.<br \/>\nBut nobody came.<br \/>\nNot that night.<br \/>\nThe next morning, Travis texted me.<br \/>\nI\u2019m sorry about yesterday.<br \/>\nI stared at the message.<br \/>\nThen another appeared.<br \/>\nThings got out of control.<br \/>\nThen:<br \/>\nWe can fix this.<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t respond.<br \/>\nTen minutes later:<br \/>\nJune please.<br \/>\nI had seen Travis angry.<br \/>\nSarcastic.<br \/>\nDismissive.<br \/>\nCold.<br \/>\nBut in nine years of marriage, I could barely remember him using the word please.<br \/>\nAt 8:42, Rebecca called.<br \/>\n\u201cWe found another account.\u201d<br \/>\nI sat upright.<br \/>\n\u201cHow much?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cCurrently about eighteen thousand.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnother one?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes. But that\u2019s not why I\u2019m calling.\u201d<br \/>\nMy hand tightened around the phone.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe account shows repeated transfers.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cTo where?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cA business account connected to Mason Bell.\u201d<br \/>\nThe name Travis had mentioned yesterday.<br \/>\n\u201cHow much?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re still reconstructing everything, but over approximately eleven months, it appears substantial amounts moved back and forth.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does substantial mean?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMore than one hundred thousand dollars in total transaction activity.\u201d<br \/>\nI stood.<br \/>\n\u201cOne hundred thousand?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cTransaction volume doesn\u2019t necessarily mean one hundred thousand in profit or even separate money. Funds can move repeatedly. We need to be precise.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOkay.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBut there\u2019s something else.\u201d<br \/>\nOf course there was.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSeveral transfers appear to line up closely with deposits from Travis\u2019s personal accounts.\u201d<br \/>\nI walked to the window.<br \/>\nMy father\u2019s pond was visible through the trees.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m saying we need more records before drawing conclusions.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cRebecca.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI know.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo. Tell me what you think I need to understand.\u201d<br \/>\nShe paused.<br \/>\n\u201cThe financial picture Travis presented to you does not appear to match the activity we\u2019re seeing.\u201d<br \/>\nThat sentence stayed with me all day.<br \/>\nBy afternoon, Travis had called eleven times.<br \/>\nI answered the twelfth.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cFinally.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid Rebecca contact Mason?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cJune, listen to me. Tell her to leave Mason alone.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhy?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause she doesn\u2019t understand the situation.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen explain it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI can\u2019t over the phone.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou had the opportunity yesterday.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI screwed up.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhich part?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAll of it.\u201d<br \/>\nThat answer surprised me.<br \/>\nTravis was silent for several seconds.<br \/>\nThen he said, \u201cI\u2019m coming back tonight.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s my home.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re handling that through the attorneys.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI need something from the workshop.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cPersonal property.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat property?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cJune, please.\u201d<br \/>\nAgain.<br \/>\nPlease.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat\u2019s in the workshop?\u201d<br \/>\nSilence.<br \/>\nThen he said, \u201cThere\u2019s a gray toolbox underneath the workbench.\u201d<br \/>\nI knew exactly which one he meant.<br \/>\nMy father\u2019s old steel toolbox.<br \/>\nIt had sat beneath that bench for years.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat\u2019s inside?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMy stuff.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat stuff?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDocuments.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen your attorney can arrange whatever is appropriate.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDo not give that box to Rebecca.\u201d<br \/>\nMy pulse jumped.<br \/>\n\u201cI never said I was going to.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cJune.\u201d<br \/>\nHis voice dropped.<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t open it.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked toward the back window.<br \/>\nThe workshop sat sixty yards from the house.<br \/>\nSuddenly it looked completely different.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause it has nothing to do with you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou hid something in my father\u2019s workshop and it has nothing to do with me?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI didn\u2019t hide it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat\u2019s inside?\u201d<br \/>\nHe breathed heavily.<br \/>\nThen said, \u201cJust leave it alone.\u201d<br \/>\nThe call ended.<br \/>\nI stood perfectly still.<br \/>\nCaleb was in town getting groceries.<br \/>\nI called Rebecca.<br \/>\nShe answered immediately.<br \/>\n\u201cTravis says there\u2019s a gray toolbox in the workshop containing documents. He told me not to open it.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t touch it yet.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhy?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause we don\u2019t know what it is, who owns the contents, or whether there are other issues involved.
