Arthur and his sons were packing the upstairs bedroom, I had gone into my home office.
The printer tray contained three forgotten pages.
Sarah must have printed them before leaving for the trip.
She had probably intended to collect them later.
The first page was information about transferring property through power of attorney.
The second discussed competency beneath the section marked PROPERTY MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY was a box that had already been checked.
David looked at Sarah.
“You filled this out?”
“It was somewhere near the maple tree.
The normality of the sound almost felt insulting.
Then Sarah looked down at the trust document again.
“Who gets the house?”
Rachel glanced at me.
I nodded.
She answered.
“Upon Mrs. Bennett’s death, the property will be sold.”
David’s head snapped up.
“Sold?”
“The proceeds will be distributed according to the trust instructions.”
“To who?”
Rachel paused.
“Not you.”
“He’s your only child!”
“And apparently that made him think he was entitled to collect early.”
David stepped backward.
For a moment, the anger vanished.
What replaced it was worse.
Hurt.
Real hurt.
“Dad wanted me to have this house.”
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Arthur’s expression changed.
I looked at David.
“Don’t use your father.”
“He told me.”
“When?”
“Before he />
There was something in his expression I didn’t understand.
Something almost apologetic.
“Arthur?”
He exhaled slowly.
“Lisa, there’s something Richard asked me to keep.”
My late husband’s name made my heart jump.
“What?”
“He told me not to give it to you unless something happened involving David and the house.”
David went completely still.
Sarah looked between us.
“What are you talking about?”
Arthur ignored her.
He looked only at me.
“I never thought I’d have to use it.”
My throat suddenly felt dry.
“Use what?”
Arthur walked down the porch steps toward his truck.
David followed him with his eyes.
Arthur opened the passenger door.
Reached beneath the seat.
And pulled out a long, faded brown envelope.
My name was written across the front.
I recognized the handwriting instantly.
Richard’s.
My husband had been dead for eleven years.
Yet seeing those familiar letters made my morning, David looked genuinely afraid.
I stared at the envelope.
There was something inside besides paper.
Something hard.
Small.
I tore open the seal.
A brass key fell into my palm.
Attached to it was a faded paper tag.
FIRST NATIONAL BANK — SAFE DEPOSIT 417.
Rachel leaned closer.
“There’s a prayed would never happen has happened.
I stopped breathing.
David whispered,
“Read it.”
I looked at him.
He looked terrified.
I continued.
You need to know the truth about the house, and more importantly, you need to know what David did before I died.
My eyes lifted from the page.
David’s face collapsed.
Arthur looked at the ground.
Sarah turned slowly toward her husband.
“What did you do?”
David didn’t answer.
I looked back at the letter.
There were three more paragraphs.
But before I could read them, David suddenly stepped forward.
“Mom.”
His voice had changed completely.
“Give me
