I want to know who I am.&#8221;<br \/>\nDad looked at her.<br \/>\n&#8220;Claire&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Was Evelyn my mother?&#8221;<br \/>\nDad hesitated.<br \/>\n&#8220;She raised you.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;That&#8217;s not what I asked.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe looked away.<br \/>\nClaire&#8217;s voice cracked.<br \/>\n&#8220;Was she my biological mother?&#8221;<br \/>\nDad finally whispered, &#8220;No.&#8221;<br \/>\nClaire froze.<br \/>\nI stared at him.<br \/>\n&#8220;Then who was?&#8221;<br \/>\nDad&#8217;s eyes moved toward me.<br \/>\n&#8220;That&#8217;s what Evelyn was trying to tell us the night she died.&#8221;<br \/>\nMy skin went cold.<br \/>\n&#8220;What did she say?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;She said Claire&#8217;s real mother was still alive.&#8221;<br \/>\nClaire&#8217;s lips parted.<br \/>\n&#8220;Alive?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;At least she was then.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Who?&#8221;<br \/>\nBefore Dad could answer, blue and red lights flooded the trees.<br \/>\nTwo sheriff&#8217;s vehicles pulled into the lot.<br \/>\nOfficers stepped out.<br \/>\n&#8220;Hands where we can see them!&#8221;<br \/>\nDad raised his hands.<br \/>\nSo did Daniel.<br \/>\nI expected everything to finally calm down.<br \/>\nInstead, Daniel looked at me and whispered, &#8220;Watch your father.&#8221;<br \/>\nOne deputy approached Dad.<br \/>\nThe other went toward Daniel.<br \/>\n&#8220;Daniel Mercer?&#8221;<br \/>\nDaniel nodded.<br \/>\nThe deputy immediately turned him around and cuffed him.<br \/>\nClaire stared.<br \/>\n&#8220;Why are you arresting him?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Outstanding warrant.&#8221;<br \/>\nDaniel didn&#8217;t resist.<br \/>\nBut as they led him away, he looked at me.<br \/>\n&#8220;Michael!&#8221;<br \/>\nI stepped forward.<br \/>\n&#8220;What?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Ask Tom what&#8217;s under the nursery floor!&#8221;<br \/>\nDad&#8217;s face went white.<br \/>\nThe deputy shoved Daniel toward the patrol car.<br \/>\n&#8220;Keep moving.&#8221;<br \/>\nDaniel twisted around.<br \/>\n&#8220;THE NURSERY FLOOR, MICHAEL!&#8221;<br \/>\nThen the car door slammed.<br \/>\nI slowly turned toward Dad.<br \/>\n&#8220;What is he talking about?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Nothing.&#8221;<br \/>\nIt came too quickly.<br \/>\nDad knew it too.<br \/>\n&#8220;What&#8217;s under the nursery floor?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;He&#8217;s trying to turn you against us.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Then look me in the eye and tell me there&#8217;s nothing there.&#8221;<br \/>\nDad wouldn&#8217;t.<br \/>\nClaire stepped beside me.<br \/>\n&#8220;Michael.&#8221;<br \/>\nShe was staring at Dad.<br \/>\n&#8220;He knows.&#8221;<br \/>\nDad rubbed both hands over his face.<br \/>\n&#8220;Please. Both of you. Come home.
