always suspected Raymond knew more about Emma’s mother disappearing than he admitted.”
I felt sick.
“And Claire was raised by him?”
“Apparently.”
I grabbed my keys.
Mom caught my wrist.
“Where are you going?”
“To find Claire.”
“You don’t that afternoon, Dad had taken us past a little lake outside town.
Claire had stared at it through the car window and said it looked peaceful.
I ran outside.
“Call me if she contacts you!”
I drove faster than I should have.
Every unanswered call made the knot in my stomach tighter.
Ten minutes later, I reached the lake.
Claire’s car was there.
Driver’s door open.
Headlights still on.
“Claire!”
Nothing.
I jumped out.
Her shoes weren’t in the car.
Her phone was lying on the driver’s seat.
So was her engagement ring.
My heart stopped.
“Claire!”
I ran toward the water.
Then I heard crying.
Not from the lake.
From behind an old picnic shelter.
I rounded the corner.
Claire was sitting on the ground, knees pulled against her chest.
Bare feet covered in dirt.
She looked up at me.
“Don’t come closer.”
I stopped.
“Okay.”
Her eyes were swollen.
“Did she tell you?”
“Some of it.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Some of it.”
I crouched several feet away.
“Then tell me the rest.”
She shook her head.
“You’ll never look at me the same way.”
“Try me.”
For several seconds, she just stared at me.
Then she reached into her jacket pocket.
“I didn’t only find those photographs tonight.”
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I found this hidden inside the wooden box.”
“What is it?”
“A note.”
“From who?”
“Raymond.”
The night seemed suddenly colder.
Claire unfolded it.
“I recognized his handwriting immediately.”
She handed it to me.
There were only three sentences.
Diane,
You should have stayed out of this.
The girl belongs with me now.
If Michael ever learns what happened that night, you’ll lose your son too.
I stared at my own name.
My stomach turned.
“This was written before I was born.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
I looked at her.
She pointed to the bottom of the page.
There was a date.
June 14, 2004.
I was six years old.
Claire’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“Michael, your parents didn’t lose contact with Raymond when I was four.”
My skin prickled.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying somebody has been lying to both of us.”
Then headlights appeared on the road behind us.
A vehicle turned into the empty parking lot.
Claire went completely still.
The color drained from her face.
“No.”
I looked toward the approaching truck.
“Do you know that car?”
Claire grabbed my arm.
Her fingernails dug into my skin.
“Michael, we have to leave.”
“Why?”
The truck stopped directly behind my car, blocking us in.
Its headlights went dark.
The driver’s door opened.
A man stepped out.
Even in the darkness, Claire recognized him.
She began shaking.
“That’s Raymond.”
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“What is he doing here?”
Claire stared at the man walking slowly toward us.
Then she whispered six words that changed everything.
“Because I called him before you came.”
I turned to her.
“You WHAT?”
Tears streamed down her face.
“I needed to know the truth.”
Raymond stopped beneath the parking lot light.
He looked older than the photograph, but it was unmistakably him.
He didn’t look surprised to see me.
In fact, he smiled.
“Michael,” he said.
My blood went cold.
“You’ve grown.”
I stepped in front of Claire.
“Tell us what happened to her mother.”
Raymond’s smile disappeared.
For a long moment, nobody moved.
Then he reached inside his coat.
Claire gasped.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out an envelope.
Old.
Yellowed.
My name was written across the front.
MICHAEL — TO BE OPENED ONLY IF CLAIRE REMEMBERS.
Raymond held it toward me.
“Your mother was supposed to give you this years ago.”
I didn’t take it.
“What’s inside?”
Raymond looked past me at Claire.
Then back at me.
“The reason Claire was brought into your parents’ home.”
My pulse thundered in my ears.
“What reason?”
His expression changed.
For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.
“She wasn’t placed there by accident.”
Claire stood beside me.
Raymond swallowed.
“Her mother chose your family.”
“Why?”
He looked directly at me.
“Because of you.”
I stared at him.
“I was a baby.”
“No, Michael.”
Raymond held the envelope closer.
“You were six.”
I froze.
“Claire came to my parents when she was four. That was before I was born.”
Raymond gave a slow, grim shake of his head.
“That’s the lie your parents have been telling you your entire life.”
And suddenly, I understood why Mom hadn’t wanted Dad to open that lockbox.
Raymond lowered his voice.
“Michael, before you open this envelope, you need to ask yourself one question.”
“What?”
He glanced toward the road behind us.
“Why would your parents lie about the year you were born?”
I took the envelope.
And before I could tear it open, my phone rang.
Mom.
I answered.
She didn’t even say hello.
She was sobbing.
“Michael, get away from Raymond right now.”
I looked at him.
He didn’t move.
Then Mom said something that made every hair on my body stand up.
“That man isn’t Raymond.”
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
Her next words came in a terrified whisper.
“Raymond died twenty-two years ago.”
I slowly raised my eyes toward the stranger standing ten feet away.
He smiled.
And this time, I noticed something I should have seen the moment he stepped beneath the light.
The scar running from his ear to his jaw.
The same scar described in the old newspaper clipping about Claire’s missing mother.
The scar belonging to the last man seen with her alive.
The stranger took one slow step toward us.
Claire gripped my hand.
And Mom screamed through the phone.
“RUN!”
TO BE CONTINUED……………….

Click Here to continuous Read Full Ending Story👉:PART 3 — THE MAN WHO STOLE RAYMOND’S NAME

Mom’s fingers tightened around my arm. “Son, there’s something you need to know before you go after her.” I stared at the empty road where Claire’s taillights had disappeared. “Then …

[1

post-7197","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-story
["GET
