I know you probably hated me for it. You deserved an explanation, but I was too afraid to give you one.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nMy eyes filled with tears.<br \/>\n&#8220;Then tell me now,&#8221; I whispered to an empty room.<br \/>\nThe next line was even harder to understand.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;The night before I disappeared, someone came to see me.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<br \/>\nSomeone?<br \/>\nWho?<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;They told me that if I stayed with you, you would eventually become part of something you never agreed to.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nMy heart began pounding.<br \/>\nI kept reading.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;I was given a choice. Leave you forever, or watch the person I loved most get destroyed because of me.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nI stared at those words for several seconds.<br \/>\nDestroyed?<br \/>\nWhat could she possibly have meant?<br \/>\nCara had never mentioned anyone threatening her.<br \/>\nShe had never told me she was in danger.<br \/>\nAnd yet, according to her letter, someone had forced her to choose between losing me and putting my life at risk.<br \/>\nThen I reached the sentence that changed everything.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Daniel, I didn&#8217;t leave because I stopped loving you. I left because I loved you enough to let you hate me.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nI broke down.<br \/>\nFor ten years, I had believed she had simply abandoned me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I had blamed myself for our argument.<br \/>\nI had wondered if she had met someone else.<br \/>\nI had spent countless nights asking what I had done wrong.<br \/>\nAnd now she was telling me none of it was true.<br \/>\nBut there was more.<br \/>\nAt the bottom of the page, Cara had written:<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;When I came back to you, I knew I was dying. But there was another reason I needed to marry you.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nMy fingers tightened around the paper.<br \/>\nAnother reason?<br \/>\nI read the final paragraph.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;There is something I never told you. Something I kept hidden for ten years. If you want the truth, don&#8217;t trust anyone who tells you they knew me better than you did.
