\/>\nDaniel&#8217;s expression hardened.<br \/>\n&#8220;I promised I&#8217;d stay away from her.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe pointed at me.<br \/>\n&#8220;But Frank broke the agreement.&#8221;<br \/>\nMy voice finally returned.<br \/>\n&#8220;What agreement?&#8221;<br \/>\nDaniel looked at me for a long moment.<br \/>\n&#8220;Your mother and Frank made a deal the night I disappeared.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my mother.<br \/>\n&#8220;Tell me the truth.&#8221;<br \/>\nShe closed her eyes.<br \/>\n&#8220;Daniel was involved with dangerous people.&#8221;<br \/>\nDaniel laughed bitterly.<br \/>\n&#8220;That&#8217;s one way to describe them.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe looked at the envelope in my hand.<br \/>\n&#8220;Give it to me.&#8221;<br \/>\nI held it tighter.<br \/>\n&#8220;No.&#8221;<br \/>\nHis face changed.<br \/>\n&#8220;Your father left that for you.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;You just said you were my father.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I am.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Then why did everyone tell me you were dead?&#8221;<br \/>\nDaniel&#8217;s jaw tightened.<br \/>\n&#8220;Because I had to die.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe words echoed through the basement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Because someone inside my company discovered that I was planning to expose them.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe glanced at my mother.<br \/>\n&#8220;They wanted me gone.&#8221;<br \/>\nMy mother whispered, &#8220;And they wanted the baby too.&#8221;<br \/>\nI felt the blood drain from my face.<br \/>\n&#8220;Me?&#8221;<br \/>\nDaniel nodded.<br \/>\n&#8220;You were the only heir.&#8221;<br \/>\nI stared at him.<br \/>\n&#8220;Heir to what?&#8221;<br \/>\nHe pointed toward the envelope.<br \/>\n&#8220;Open it.&#8221;<br \/>\nMy fingers trembled as I tore it open.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a birth certificate.<br \/>\nMy name.<br \/>\nMy mother&#8217;s name.<br \/>\nAnd under <strong>Father<\/strong>, Daniel&#8217;s name.<br \/>\nBut beneath it was another document.<br \/>\nA legal trust.<br \/>\nMy eyes widened.<br \/>\nThe amount listed on the first page was so enormous that I thought I had did he pretend to be my father?&#8221;<br \/>\nMy mother began crying.<br \/>\n&#8220;Because you needed someone who would love you without asking questions.&#8221;<br \/>\nDaniel interrupted.<br \/>\n&#8220;And because I couldn&#8217;t protect you.&#8221;<br \/>\nI turned toward him.<br \/>\n&#8220;Then why come back now?&#8221;<br \/>\nHe didn&#8217;t answer.<br \/>\nI opened the final page of the envelope.<br \/>\nThere was a handwritten letter.<br \/>\nThe handwriting was unmistakably Frank&#8217;s.<br \/>\nMy hands shook as I began reading.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;If you&#8217;re reading this, I&#8217;ve failed to protect you from the truth.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nI stopped breathing.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;I promised your mother I would never tell you who your father was unless I knew the people who wanted you dead were gone.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nMy eyes filled with tears.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;But they aren&#8217;t gone.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nI looked up.<br \/>\nDaniel&#8217;s face had gone pale.<br \/>\nMy mother whispered, &#8220;Keep reading.&#8221;<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;There is someone you have trusted your entire life who has been helping them.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nI stared at the words.<br \/>\nSomeone I trusted.<br \/>\nSomeone close to me.<br \/>\nSomeone who had access to my childhood, my family, and my life.<br \/>\nMy hands began trembling violently.<br \/>\n&#8220;Who?&#8221;<br \/>\nNeither my mother nor Daniel answered.<br \/>\nI continued reading.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t tell you because the moment they discovered I knew, they would have killed me.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nMy heart broke.<br \/>\n&#8220;That&#8217;s why you were afraid to tell me&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\nThe final lines were written in darker ink.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;And if I am dead when you read this, do not trust your mother&#8217;s house.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nI looked around the basement.<br \/>\n&#8220;What does that mean?&#8221;<br \/>\nDaniel suddenly grabbed my arm.<br \/>\n&#8220;We have to leave.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Why?&#8221;<br \/>\nHe pointed at the ceiling.<br \/>\n&#8220;Because we&#8217;re not alone.&#8221;<br \/>\nA faint sound came from upstairs.<br \/>\nFootsteps.<br \/>\nSlow.<br \/>\nDeliberate.<br \/>\nSomeone was walking through the house.<br \/>\nMy mother covered her mouth.<br \/>\nDaniel whispered, &#8220;They found us.&#8221;<br \/>\nThen my phone vibrated.<br \/>\nI looked at the screen.<br \/>\nIt was a message from my husband.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Where are you? Please call me immediately.
