She wore a faded blue sweater and held one hand against the doorframe as if she needed it to remain standing.<br \/>\nBut it wasn&#8217;t her age that terrified me.<br \/>\nIt was her face.<br \/>\nI knew that face.<br \/>\nI had seen it every night of my childhood in the only photograph Frank had ever allowed me to keep.<br \/>\nMy mother.<br \/>\nI stumbled backward, nearly falling from the porch.<br \/>\n&#8220;No&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\nThe woman covered her mouth.<br \/>\n&#8220;Oh my God.&#8221;<br \/>\nMy knees weakened.<br \/>\n&#8220;You&#8217;re dead.&#8221;<br \/>\nShe didn&#8217;t answer.<br \/>\n&#8220;You&#8217;re my mother.&#8221;<br \/>\nHer eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe word shattered something inside me.<br \/>\nFor thirty-five years, I had believed my mother was gone. There are things you need to know before you judge him.&#8221;<br \/>\nI almost walked away.<br \/>\nEvery part of me screamed that this had to be some cruel mistake. Maybe she looked like my mother. Maybe Frank had sent me to the wrong house. Maybe I was grieving so badly that my mind was playing tricks on me.<br \/>\nThen she whispered my childhood nickname.<br \/>\nThe one only my mother had ever used.<br \/>\nMy heart stopped.<br \/>\nI stepped inside.<br \/>\nThe house smelled strangely familiar\u2014lavender soap, old books, and cinnamon.<br \/>\nOn the wall hung photographs.<br \/>\nHundreds of them.<br \/>\nI walked closer.<br \/>\nThere I was.<br \/>\nA baby in my mother&#8217;s arms.<br \/>\nMe at two years old.<br \/>\nMe blowing out birthday candles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Me asleep on a couch.<br \/>\nMe standing beside Frank in a photograph I had never seen before.<br \/>\nMy hands began shaking.<br \/>\n&#8220;You&#8217;ve been watching me?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe nodded.<br \/>\n&#8220;From a distance.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Why?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Because I promised Frank.&#8221;<br \/>\nI turned sharply.<br \/>\n&#8220;You promised him what?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe wiped tears from her cheeks.<br \/>\n&#8220;That I would stay away from you unless he could no longer protect you.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe room went silent.<br \/>\n&#8220;Protect me from what?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe looked toward the hallway.<br \/>\n&#8220;Not from what.&#8221;<br \/>\nHer voice dropped.<br \/>\n&#8220;From whom.&#8221;<br \/>\nA cold feeling spread through my chest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Who?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe didn&#8217;t answer immediately.<br \/>\nInstead, she walked to an old wooden cabinet and unlocked the bottom drawer.<br \/>\nFrom inside, she removed a thick brown envelope.<br \/>\nMy name was written across the front.<br \/>\nNot my married name.<br \/>\nMy childhood name.<br \/>\nThe name Frank had given me when I was four.<br \/>\nI stared at it.<br \/>\n&#8220;What&#8217;s inside?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Everything Frank was too afraid to tell you.&#8221;<br \/>\nI reached for the envelope.<br \/>\nBut before I could open it, the woman grabbed my wrist.<br \/>\n&#8220;There is one thing you must understand first.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;What?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Frank didn&#8217;t lie because he wanted to hurt you.&#8221;<br \/>\nHer fingers trembled.<br \/>\n&#8220;He lied because someone wanted you dead.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe envelope slipped from my hands.<br \/>\n&#8220;What did you just say?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe looked toward the locked front door.<br \/>\nThen she whispered, &#8220;Your mother wasn&#8217;t supposed to survive either.&#8221;<br \/>\nA loud knock suddenly echoed through the house.<br \/>\nWe both froze.<br \/>\nAnother knock.<br \/>\nHarder this time.<br \/>\nThe woman turned pale.<br \/>\n&#8220;Who is that?&#8221;<br \/>\nI whispered.<br \/>\nShe stared at me with terror.<br \/>\n&#8220;Someone who should have learned years ago that you were still alive.&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd then a man&#8217;s voice came from the other side of the door.<br \/>\n&#8220;Open the door.
