Adam said quietly. &#8220;It isn&#8217;t.&#8221;<br \/>\nThen Ben spoke from behind us.<br \/>\n&#8220;Grandma?&#8221;<br \/>\nI turned.<br \/>\nHe was holding another photograph.<br \/>\n&#8220;This was inside the box.&#8221;<br \/>\nI took it from him.<br \/>\nIt showed Elena standing in front of my house.<br \/>\nBut she wasn&#8217;t alone.<br \/>\nShe was holding a baby.<br \/>\nA tiny baby wrapped in a white blanket.<br \/>\nI stared at the photograph.<br \/>\nMy hands began shaking.<br \/>\n&#8220;Who is that?&#8221;<br \/>\nAdam looked closer.<br \/>\n&#8220;I don&#8217;t know.&#8221;<br \/>\nTara suddenly covered her mouth.<br \/>\n&#8220;Mom&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;What?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe pointed toward the baby.<br \/>\n&#8220;Look at the blanket.&#8221;<br \/>\nThere was a small embroidered symbol on it.<br \/>\nA green leaf.<br \/>\nI recognized it instantly.<br \/>\nIt was the same symbol stitched onto the inside of Ben&#8217;s green backpack.<br \/>\nMy heart stopped.<br \/>\n&#8220;Why would Elena have that symbol?&#8221;<br \/>\nNobody answered.<br \/>\nThen Ben slowly reached into his backpack.<br \/>\nHe pulled out a small envelope.<br \/>\n&#8220;I found this too.&#8221;<br \/>\nMy name was written across it.<br \/>\nBut this handwriting was different from Ben&#8217;s.<br \/>\nIt was older.<br \/>\nMore elegant.<br \/>\nMy hands trembled as I opened it.<br \/>\nInside was a single sheet of paper.<br \/>\nThe message was only four lines long.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;If you are reading this, I failed to protect you.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Daniel was never the enemy.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Victor&#8217;s father was never acting alone.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;And the child in the photograph is still alive.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nI dropped the letter.<br \/>\nAdam picked it up.<br \/>\n&#8220;Mom&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\nI couldn&#8217;t speak.<br \/>\nThe child in the photograph was still alive.<br \/>\nThat meant Elena had secretly had a child.<br \/>\nA child connected to Daniel Mercer.<br \/>\nA child connected to Victor&#8217;s family.<br \/>\nAnd somehow, that child was connected to Ben&#8217;s green backpack.<br \/>\nThen my phone rang.<br \/>\nUnknown number.<br \/>\nI answered without speaking.<br \/>\nFor several seconds, there was only breathing.<br \/>\nThen a woman&#8217;s voice whispered,<br \/>\n&#8220;Do you remember what Elena looked like the last time you saw her?&#8221;<br \/>\nMy blood ran cold.<br \/>\n&#8220;Who is this?&#8221;<br \/>\nThe woman ignored my question.<br \/>\n&#8220;She wasn&#8217;t in that coffin.&#8221;<br \/>\nI gripped the phone.<br \/>\n&#8220;Who are you?&#8221;<br \/>\nThe voice became softer.<br \/>\n&#8220;Someone who has been watching your family for a very long time.&#8221;<br \/>\nThen she said six words that made my entire body freeze.<br \/>\n&#8220;Your sister wants to come home.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe call ended.<br \/>\nAt that exact moment, headlights appeared outside.<br \/>\nA vehicle slowly pulled into my driveway.<br \/>\nThe driver&#8217;s door opened.<br \/>\nA woman stepped out.<br \/>\nShe was older now.<br \/>\nHer hair was streaked with gray.<br \/>\nShe stood beneath the porch light and looked directly at me through the window.<br \/>\nI couldn&#8217;t breathe.<br \/>\nAdam whispered,<br \/>\n&#8220;Mom&#8230;
