But the man beside her didn&#8217;t look frightened at all.<br \/>\nHe looked calm.<br \/>\nToo calm.<br \/>\nHis eyes moved from me to the kitchen counter, where the black metal box was sitting.<br \/>\nThen he smiled.<br \/>\n&#8220;So&#8230; Ben finally told you.&#8221;<br \/>\nMy grip tightened around the railing.<br \/>\n&#8220;Who are you?&#8221;<br \/>\nThe man didn&#8217;t answer.<br \/>\nInstead, Tara stepped forward.<br \/>\n&#8220;Mom, please. Just listen to me.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Listen to you?&#8221; I whispered. &#8220;You lied to me about the renovations. You sent my grandchildren here because someone was looking for them. And now this man is standing in my house.&#8221;<br \/>\nTara&#8217;s eyes filled with tears.<br \/>\n&#8220;We didn&#8217;t know who else to trust.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Then why did you tell me not to let Ben come back?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe looked at the man beside her.<br \/>\nHe finally spoke.<br \/>\n&#8220;Because Ben has something that belongs to me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill run through my body.<br \/>\n&#8220;What does a nine-year-old boy possibly have that belongs to you?&#8221;<br \/>\nThe man&#8217;s smile disappeared.<br \/>\n&#8220;Evidence.&#8221;<br \/>\nThat one word made everything suddenly make sense.<br \/>\nThe cameras.<br \/>\nThe hidden compartment.<br \/>\nThe black box.<br \/>\nThe photographs.<br \/>\nThe children&#8217;s fear.<br \/>\nBut there was still one question I couldn&#8217;t answer.<br \/>\n&#8220;Why would Ben be recording everything?&#8221;<br \/>\nTara looked down.<br \/>\n&#8220;Because he saw something he wasn&#8217;t supposed to see.&#8221;<br \/>\nI turned toward her.<br \/>\n&#8220;What?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe took a shaky breath.<br \/>\n&#8220;Three months ago, Adam discovered that money was disappearing from his company&#8217;s accounts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<br \/>\n&#8220;What does that have to do with my grandchildren?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Everything.&#8221;<br \/>\nShe explained that Adam had hired someone to investigate the missing money.
