My hands were shaking so badly that I nearly dropped it.<br \/>\nI didn&#8217;t call out.<br \/>\nI didn&#8217;t want whoever was upstairs to know where I was.<br \/>\nI stepped onto the staircase and slowly climbed.<br \/>\nEvery creak of the wooden steps sounded deafening in the silence.<br \/>\nWhen I reached the hallway, I stopped.<br \/>\nThe guest room door was slightly open.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I was certain I&#8217;d left it closed.<br \/>\nI pushed it open with my foot.<br \/>\nThe room was empty.<br \/>\nThe bed was still stripped.<br \/>\nThe black metal box was exactly where I&#8217;d left it.<br \/>\nBut something had changed.<br \/>\nThe mattress had been moved.<br \/>\nNot much.<br \/>\nJust a few inches.<br \/>\nI walked closer.<br \/>\nThere were fresh scratches on the wooden floor beneath the bed.<br \/>\nSomeone had pulled it away from the wall.<br \/>\nI crouched down and looked underneath.<br \/>\nAt first, I saw nothing.<br \/>\nThen I noticed a thin black cable disappearing through a small hole in the wall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My heart began pounding.<br \/>\nI followed the cable with my eyes.<br \/>\nIt led behind the old wooden dresser.<br \/>\nI moved the dresser aside.<br \/>\nThere was a tiny square opening in the wall.<br \/>\nIt had been carefully covered with paint, almost impossible to notice.<br \/>\nI touched it.<br \/>\nThe panel moved.<br \/>\nBehind it was a narrow hidden compartment.<br \/>\nInside were photographs.<br \/>\nDozens of them.<br \/>\nMy photographs.<br \/>\nPictures of me leaving the house.<br \/>\nPictures of me gardening.<br \/>\nPictures of me sleeping in my living room chair.<br \/>\nPictures of Ben and Sophie playing in the backyard.<br \/>\nBut the newest photographs weren&#8217;t taken from outside.<br \/>\nThey had clearly been taken from inside my home.<br \/>\nSomeone had been living in my house without my knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed the photographs and ran downstairs.<br \/>\nMy mind raced through every possibility.<br \/>\nCould it be Adam?<br \/>\nTara?<br \/>\nSomeone they knew?<br \/>\nI suddenly remembered something from six weeks earlier.<br \/>\nBen had asked me a strange question.<br \/>\n&#8220;Grandma, does the attic have another way out?&#8221;<br \/>\nI had laughed.<br \/>\n&#8220;No, sweetheart. Why?&#8221;<br \/>\nHe had simply shrugged.<br \/>\n&#8220;I was just wondering.&#8221;<br \/>\nI hadn&#8217;t thought about it since.<br \/>\nNow I did.<br \/>\nI ran to the attic.<br \/>\nThe door was locked.<br \/>\nI had kept it locked for years because I rarely went up there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I searched through a drawer downstairs and found the old key.<br \/>\nWhen I opened the attic door, a wave of cold air hit my face.<br \/>\nDust floated through the beam of light from the hallway.<br \/>\nI climbed the narrow stairs.<br \/>\nNothing seemed unusual at first.<br \/>\nOld furniture.<br \/>\nBoxes of Christmas decorations.<br \/>\nMy husband&#8217;s old suitcases.<br \/>\nThen I noticed footprints in the dust.<br \/>\nFresh footprints.<br \/>\nSmall ones.<br \/>\nThey led toward the far wall.<br \/>\nI followed them.<br \/>\nAt the wall was an old wooden trunk.<br \/>\nI opened it.<br \/>\nInside were children&#8217;s clothes, blankets, and several empty food wrappers.<br \/>\nMy breathing stopped.<br \/>\nSomeone had been hiding here.<br \/>\nRecently.<br \/>\nThen I found a folded piece of paper underneath the blankets.<br \/>\nI opened it.<br \/>\nThe handwriting was unmistakable.<br \/>\nIt belonged to Ben.<br \/>\nThere were only six words written on the page.<br \/>\n&#8220;Grandma, please don&#8217;t trust Dad.&#8221;<br \/>\nI stared at the words until they blurred.<br \/>\nAdam.<br \/>\nMy own son.<br \/>\nWhat could he possibly have done to make his nine-year-old son afraid of him?<br \/>\nSuddenly, I heard my phone ringing downstairs.<br \/>\nI ran back down and looked at the screen.<br \/>\nIt was Adam.<br \/>\nI answered immediately.<br \/>\n&#8220;Adam, where are you?&#8221;<br \/>\nHe didn&#8217;t respond.<br \/>\nI could hear the sound of a car engine.<br \/>\nThen he whispered,<br \/>\n&#8220;Mom, listen carefully.
