Maybe ten.\u201d<br \/>\nRobert let out an angry breath. \u201cShe\u2019s confused.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m not confused!\u201d Maya shouted.<br \/>\nEveryone in the room went still.<br \/>\nMaya had always been quiet. Even as a little girl, she apologized when someone else stepped on her foot.<br \/>\nNow her whole body trembled, but she kept speaking.<br \/>\n\u201cHe stood behind me until I got it right. When I said I wouldn\u2019t do it, he took my phone and told me you would lose your job if the hospital kept calling you. He said the bills would take all the money you were saving for college.\u201d<br \/>\nTears ran down her face.<br \/>\n\u201cHe said if I loved you, I would sign.\u201d<br \/>\nI sat beside her and took her hand.<br \/>\n\u201cYou were afraid,\u201d I said. \u201cThis is not your fault.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI knew it was wrong.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou are a child. He used your love for me to force you.\u201d<br \/>\nRobert looked around the room as if he expected someone to defend him.<br \/>\n\u201cIt was a cancellation form,\u201d he said. \u201cNot a confession to murder.\u201d<br \/>\nDr. Lawson\u2019s expression hardened. \u201cIt was a refusal of recommended medical care.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe first doctor said it was probably a cyst.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cA cyst large enough to require immediate follow-up.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDo you know how much those scans cost?\u201d<br \/>\nDr. Lawson stared at him. \u201cYour daughter may lose an ovary tonight.\u201d<br \/>\nRobert\u2019s face changed.<br \/>\nMaya squeezed my hand.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d she whispered.<br \/>\nBefore Dr. Lawson could answer, the door opened and two members of the surgical team entered.<br \/>\nThe woman introduced herself as Dr. Patel, a pediatric surgeon. We will try to preserve the ovary, but I cannot promise that will be possible. The longer we wait, the greater the risk of tissue damage and other complications.\u201d<br \/>\nMaya stared at the image.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat thing is inside me?\u201d<br \/>\nDr. Patel nodded. \u201cYes, but you\u2019re in the right place now.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIs it cancer?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe won\u2019t know until it is removed and examined. Many growths like this are not cancerous, especially in someone your age. Right now, our priority is operating safely.\u201d<br \/>\nA nurse placed consent forms on a rolling table.<br \/>\nI picked up the pen.<br \/>\nRobert grabbed the papers before I could sign.<br \/>\n\u201cNo surgery until we get another opinion.\u201d<br \/>\nDr. Patel remained calm. \u201cThe MRI has already been reviewed by two radiologists and the on-call gynecologic surgeon.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019re asking us to let strangers cut open our daughter.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m asking you to prevent further damage.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe needs time to think.\u201d<br \/>\nMaya looked directly at him. \u201cI already decided.\u201d<br \/>\nRobert turned toward her.<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019re fifteen.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd I\u2019m the one in pain.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou don\u2019t understand the risks.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI understand that you left this inside me for five weeks.\u201d<br \/>\nRobert lowered his voice. \u201cMaya, we will discuss this as a family.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou mean you\u2019ll stand in my doorway until I agree with you.\u201d<br \/>\nHis face went blank.<br \/>\nThe security officer moved beside the bed.<br \/>\n\u201cMr. Thorne, step away from the patient.\u201d<br \/>\nRobert released the paperwork.<br \/>\nI signed the consent form.<br \/>\nMy hand was steady.<br \/>\nDr. Patel took the papers and turned to the nurse. \u201cPrepare the operating room.\u201d<br \/>\nRobert pointed at me. \u201cIf something happens to her, it will be your fault.\u201d<br \/>\nI stood between him and Maya.<br \/>\n\u201cNo, Robert. Sometimes I couldn\u2019t remember going to sleep.\u201d<br \/>\nThe nurse stopped writing.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m going to speak with the doctor.\u201d<br \/>\nShe left the room quickly.<br \/>\nMaya watched the closed door. \u201cAm I in trouble?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThey\u2019re going to think I took drugs.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThey know your father gave them to you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cHe told me they were safe.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDid you ever see the bottle?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOnce.
