According to Emily, Sarah had driven her to the empty house one Saturday morning and told her they were going through some of Grandma Rose’s belongings.
Sarah brought two nearly identical stuffed white rabbits.
She gave one to Emily and placed the second inside an old wooden toy chest in the upstairs bedroom where Sarah had slept as a child.
Then she told Emily something strange.
“If anybody ever asks about the rabbits, you only remember one.”
At the time, Emily thought it was a game.
Now I understood.

Sarah had been preparing for the possibility that Jason would discover what she was doing.
Ruiz immediately contacted officers.
Within minutes, a team was sent to Willow Creek Road.
I wanted to go with them.
Ruiz refused.
“If Jason is looking for the same thing, that house could be dangerous.”
So I stayed beside Emily.
And waited.
Twenty-seven minutes later, Ruiz’s phone rang.
She answered without leaving the room.
“Yes?”
A pause.
“The back door was already open.”
My relief disappeared.
“Someone had been there?”
“Recently.”
“Jason?”
“We don’t know.”
Ruiz explained that officers had found fresh mud across the kitchen floor and several drawers pulled open downstairs.
Someone had searched the house.

But apparently, they had not searched carefully enough.
The wooden toy chest was still closed.
Inside it sat the second white rabbit.
And hidden beneath a seam along its back was a tiny memory card.
Sarah’s second copy.
The one Jason had been desperate to find.
“What’s on it?”
“Forensics is examining it now.”
“Can it tell us where Sarah is?”
“We hope so.”
But the investigators found something else inside Grandma Rose’s house.
On the upstairs hallway floor, near the bedroom where the rabbit had been hidden, officers discovered a fresh cigarette butt.
Jason smoked.
I knew because Sarah used to complain about it constantly.
He had promised to quit before they married.
Apparently, he never had.
Ruiz warned me not to jump to conclusions until DNA testing was completed.
But one fact was impossible to ignore.
Someone had been inside that supposedly empty house shortly before police arrived.
Someone who appeared to have been searching.
That meant Jason might still be nearby.
And if he knew about Grandma Rose’s house, he might also know that Emily was the only person who could lead him to the evidence.
Police security outside Emily’s hospital room doubled.
For the first time since I found my daughter, I understood that rescuing her from the enclosure had not necessarily removed her from danger.
By late afternoon, investigators had recovered the first files from Sarah’s memory card.
Ruiz asked me to step into a private consultation room.
She closed the door behind us.
“What I’m about to tell you cannot leave this room.”
I nodded.
“The files confirm much of Sarah’s letter.”
She placed several printed pages on the table.
Jason had apparently been using Sarah’s identity and access credentials to move money through accounts connected to several small businesses.
Some transactions were relatively small.
Others were not.
One transfer was for $240,000.
Another was for $510,000.
Then Ruiz pointed to a number near the bottom.
$1,840,000.
I stared at it.
“What was he doing?”
“That’s still being investigated.”
But Sarah had done more than copy financial records.
She had recorded Jason.
There were several audio files.
In one, Jason could be heard arguing with another man about money.
In another, Sarah confronted him.
Her voice shook, but her words were clear.
“I copied everything.”
Jason answered:
“Then delete it.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.”
“I understand enough.”
Then Sarah said the sentence Emily had remembered.
“You’re not using my name for this.”
The recording ended with a door slamming.
Ruiz opened another file.
“This one was recorded three nights before you found Emily.”
Sarah’s voice filled the room again.
“If something happens to me, Jason is responsible.”
My chest tightened.
Then another voice appeared.
Jason.
“You really think Mark is going to save you?”
I stopped breathing.
Sarah answered:
“This isn’t about Mark.”
Jason laughed.
“It always comes back to him.”
My eyes moved toward Ruiz.
“What does that mean?”
“We don’t know.”
The recording continued.
Jason’s voice became quieter.
“You should have left the past alone.”
Then the file abruptly ended.
“The past?”
I asked.
Ruiz nodded.
“That caught our attention too.”
“What past?”
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”
I had assumed Sarah discovered something happening during their marriage.
Now I wasn’t so certain.
Maybe whatever Jason was involved in had started long before Sarah met him.
Ruiz turned to the next document.
“Sarah kept notes.”
The notes contained dates, vehicle descriptions, partial license plates, names, account numbers, and locations.
One location appeared repeatedly.
Miller’s Landing.
I knew it.
Everyone in the county did.
It was an abandoned marina about thirty miles north, closed after a flood damaged most of the docks several years earlier.
I immediately remembered where Jason’s SUV had been discovered.
Forty miles north.
“Is that near where you found his vehicle?”
“Eleven miles.”<br
