I\u2019m still coming.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cCan Dad come too?\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at Tony.<br \/>\nHis eyes were wet.<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then, just before she hung up, Lily whispered, \u201cDon\u2019t be mad at him.\u201d<br \/>\nThe line went dead.<br \/>\nI lowered the phone.<br \/>\nTony and I stared at each other.<br \/>\n\u201cShe knows.\u201d<br \/>\nHe nodded.<br \/>\n\u201cHow much?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cEnough.\u201d<br \/>\nMy voice rose before I could stop it.<br \/>\n\u201cEnough WHAT, Tony?\u201d<br \/>\nSeveral people near the elevators glanced toward us.<br \/>\nTony stepped closer.<br \/>\n\u201cNot here.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked down at the second envelope.<br \/>\n\u201cThen upstairs.\u201d<br \/>\nThe manager touched my arm.<br \/>\n\u201cMrs. Carter.\u201d<br \/>\nI turned.<br \/>\nShe hesitated before handing me the folder.<br \/>\n\u201cThis belongs to your family.\u201d<br \/>\nI took it.<br \/>\nThen she looked at Tony.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<br \/>\nHe gave her a tired nod.<br \/>\n\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tony and I walked toward the elevator without speaking.<br \/>\nThe envelope felt impossibly heavy in my hand.<br \/>\nWhen the doors closed, I pressed the button for the sixth floor.<br \/>\nTony stood beside me.<br \/>\n\u201cTell me now.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMarissa\u2014\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBefore those doors open.\u201d<br \/>\nHe looked at the floor.<br \/>\n\u201cI didn\u2019t spend the rest of the money.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI know that.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI put it somewhere safe.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cFor what?\u201d<br \/>\nHis jaw tightened.<br \/>\n\u201cFor you.\u201d<br \/>\nI stared at him.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<br \/>\nThe elevator climbed.<br \/>\nSecond floor.<br \/>\nThird.<br \/>\nFourth.<br \/>\n\u201cTony.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI was trying to make sure you\u2019d be okay.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t I be okay?\u201d<br \/>\nHe finally looked at me.<br \/>\nAnd that was when I understood the part he had been too afraid to say.<br \/>\nNot financially okay.<br \/>\nAfter Lily.<br \/>\nI shook my head immediately.<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cMarissa.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou need to hear me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t need money for after Lily because there is no after Lily.\u201d<br \/>\nThe words came out before I could stop them.<br \/>\nTony\u2019s face crumpled.<br \/>\nI knew how irrational it sounded.<br \/>\nI knew what the doctors had told us.<br \/>\nI knew what I had watched happen to my daughter\u2019s body month after month.<br \/>\nBut mothers are allowed to live inside impossible sentences when reality is unbearable.<br \/>\nTony reached for my hand.<br \/>\nI pulled it away.<br \/>\n\u201cYou planned for her funeral, didn\u2019t you?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou planned something.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\nThe elevator chimed.<br \/>\nSixth floor.<br \/>\nThe doors opened.<br \/>\nTony didn\u2019t move.<br \/>\nNeither did I.<br \/>\nThen he whispered, \u201cLily planned part of it.\u201d<br \/>\nMy blood went cold.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\nA couple waiting in the hallway stepped into the elevator.<br \/>\nTony gently guided me out.<br \/>\nThe doors closed behind us.<br \/>\n\u201cLily came to me after her last appointment.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhich appointment?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe one where Dr. Reynolds talked to us about hospice.\u201d<br \/>\nMy stomach twisted.<br \/>\n\u201cThat was three months ago.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI know.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe barely spoke for two days afterward.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe spoke to me.\u201d<br \/>\nThe words hurt more than they should have.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<br \/>\nTony looked toward our hotel room at the end of the hallway.<br \/>\n\u201cShe asked what would happen to you when she was gone.\u201d<br \/>\nI couldn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked WHAT?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe was worried about you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe\u2019s ten years old.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI told her that.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe should be worried about cartoons and ice cream and whether she gets to stay up past bedtime. She should not be worried about what happens to her mother after she dies.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI know.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen why did you let her?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBecause I couldn\u2019t stop her from understanding what was happening.\u201d<br \/>\nThat silenced me.<br \/>\nTony\u2019s voice dropped.<br \/>\n\u201cShe knows, Marissa.\u201d<br \/>\nI closed my eyes.<br \/>\n\u201cShe knows more than we think she does.\u201d<br \/>\nI wanted to argue.<br \/>\nI couldn\u2019t.<br \/>\nBecause I had seen it too.<br \/>\nThe way Lily sometimes studied my face after doctors left the room.<br \/>\nThe way she started telling me where she wanted certain toys to go.<br \/>\nThe way she had asked whether I remembered the recipe for pancakes because, according to her, \u201cDad always burns them.\u201d<br \/>\nI had pretended those conversations meant nothing.<br \/>\nTony hadn\u2019t.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did she ask you?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe asked if you would still have me.\u201d<br \/>\nMy eyes opened.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe said, \u2018When I\u2019m gone, will Mom still have you?\u2019\u201d<br \/>\nTony\u2019s voice broke.<br \/>\n\u201cI told her yes.\u201d<br \/>\nTears spilled down my cheeks.<br \/>\n\u201cShe asked me to promise.\u201d<br \/>\nI covered my mouth.<br \/>\n\u201cAnd then she made me promise something else.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat I wouldn\u2019t let you spend the rest of your life sitting beside her bed after she wasn\u2019t in it anymore.\u201d<br \/>\nI turned away.<br \/>\nI couldn\u2019t hear this.<br \/>\nNot in a hotel hallway.<br \/>\nNot while Lily was twenty yards away wearing Minnie Mouse pajamas.<br \/>\nTony stepped closer.<br \/>\n\u201cShe said you\u2019d forget how to live.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cStop.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe was scared you\u2019d stop eating.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cTony.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe was scared you\u2019d stop going outside.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cSTOP.\u201d<br \/>\nMy voice echoed down the hallway.<br \/>\nTony went silent.<br \/>\nI wiped my face quickly.<br \/>\nThen I heard something behind our hotel room door.<br \/>\nA small laugh.<br \/>\nLily.<br \/>\nShe was watching television.<br \/>\nAlive.<br \/>\nHere.<br \/>\nRight now.<br \/>\nI walked toward the door.<br \/>\nTony caught my arm gently.<br your envelope?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe gave it to me sealed.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhen?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe night before we flew here.\u201d<br \/>\nMy throat closed.<br \/>\nTony continued.<br \/>\n\u201cShe told me I had to put it with the papers.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked down at the envelope again.<br \/>\nMy daughter\u2019s words were inside.<br \/>\nWords she apparently expected me to read after she was gone.<br \/>\nEvery instinct in me screamed to tear it open.<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t.<br \/>\nInstead, I slid it into my purse.<br \/>\nThen I opened the hotel room door.<br \/>\nLily was sitting upright against three pillows.<br \/>\nHer Minnie Mouse ears were crooked on her head.<br \/>\nA cartoon played on the television.<br \/>\nA half-eaten cup of chocolate pudding sat beside her.<br \/>\nShe smiled.<br \/>\n\u201cThere you are.\u201d<br \/>\nI almost collapsed.<br \/>\nInstead, I walked across the room and wrapped my arms around her.<br \/>\n\u201cMom!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI love you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI love you too, but you\u2019re squishing me.\u201d<br \/>\nI laughed through my tears and loosened my arms.<br \/>\nLily looked over my shoulder.<br \/>\n\u201cDad?\u201d<br \/>\nTony stood in the doorway.<br \/>\n\u201cYeah, bug?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIs Mom mad?\u201d<br \/>\nHe glanced at me.<br \/>\n\u201cA little.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m not mad.\u201d<br \/>\nLily raised one eyebrow.<br \/>\nShe had inherited that from me.<br \/>\n\u201cYou have your mad eyebrows.\u201d<br \/>\nDespite everything, Tony laughed.<br \/>\nI sat beside her.<br \/>\n\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAbout what?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe envelope.\u201d<br \/>\nShe looked at Tony.<br \/>\nHe shook his head slightly.<br \/>\nNot telling her to lie.<br \/>\nGiving her permission to decide.<br \/>\nLily looked back at me.<br \/>\n\u201cBecause you cry when we talk about later.\u201d<br \/>\nThe sentence cut straight through me.<br \/>\n\u201cI cry because I love you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI know.\u201d<br \/>\nShe picked at the edge of her blanket.<br \/>\n\u201cBut sometimes when you cry, everybody has to stop talking.\u201d<br \/>\nI went completely still.<br \/>\nChildren have a way of saying the truth without decorating it.<br \/>\nLily continued.<br \/>\n\u201cDad lets me talk.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked at Tony.<br \/>\nHe immediately looked away.<br \/>\n\u201cHe cries too,\u201d Lily added.<br \/>\nTony cleared his throat.<br \/>\n\u201cTraitor.\u201d<br \/>\nShe smiled.<br \/>\n\u201cBut he waits until he thinks I\u2019m asleep.\u201d<br \/>\nThat destroyed whatever composure he had left.<br \/>\nTony turned toward the window.<br \/>\nLily reached out.<br \/>\n\u201cDad.\u201d<br \/>\nHe came to the bed.<br \/>\nShe took his hand.<br \/>\nThen mine.<br \/>\nFor several seconds, the three of us sat there connected.<br \/>\nNo secrets.<br \/>\nNo envelopes.<br \/>\nNo doctors.<br \/>\nJust \/>\nOur checkout time was approaching.<br \/>\nOur drive home was long.<br \/>\nHer medications had to stay refrigerated.<br \/>\nEverything sensible said no.<br \/>\nTony answered first.<br \/>\n\u201cAbsolutely.\u201d<br \/>\nLily grinned.<br \/>\nTwenty minutes later, we were driving toward the water.<br \/>\nWe postponed checkout.<br \/>\nTony called the airline and moved our flight to that evening.<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t ask what it cost.<br \/>\nFor once, money felt like the least important thing in the world.<br \/>\nThe beach was almost empty.<br \/>\nTony carried Lily from the wheelchair to the edge of the water.<br \/>\nShe had become so light.<br \/>\nThat fact haunted me.<br \/>\nBut Lily didn\u2019t seem to care.<br \/>\nShe wrapped both arms around Tony\u2019s between us and let the ocean chase her feet.<br \/>\nEventually, she became tired.<br \/>\nTony lifted her.<br \/>\nLily rested her head against his shoulder.<br \/>\nWe walked back toward the \/>\n\u201cLily?\u201d<br \/>\nShe looked at me.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s not bad, Mom.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThen tell me.\u201d<br \/>\nShe thought for a moment.<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br the money. Then the property. Then the envelope.
