But the tissue around it suggests this happened well before the cast.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Days?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Longer.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Weeks?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Possibly months.&#8221;<br \/>\nI stared at Eli.<br \/>\nMonths.<br \/>\nAn object had broken inside his arm.<br \/>\nThe wound had healed around it.<br \/>\nThen sometime later, his arm had been fractured again.<br \/>\nAnd instead of taking him to a hospital, someone had sealed everything beneath a cast.<br \/>\n&#8220;How does a key get embedded that deeply?&#8221;<br \/>\nDaniel&#8217;s expression hardened.<br \/>\n&#8220;Force.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;What kind?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I can&#8217;t tell you exactly.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Could he have fallen on it?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Possible.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;But?&#8221;<br \/>\nHe looked at me.<br \/>\n&#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t assume that.&#8221;<br \/>\nI thought of Martha&#8217;s explanations.<br \/>\nTrees.<br \/>\nFalls.<br \/>\nClumsiness.<br \/>\nAgain and again.<br \/>\n&#8220;What about the multiple fractures?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Radiology agrees. Shed. Crawl space. Storm shelter. Neighboring structure.&#8221;<br \/>\nShe pointed to one corner of Eli&#8217;s drawing.<br \/>\nI hadn&#8217;t noticed it before.<br \/>\nA small green rectangle.<br \/>\n&#8220;What is that?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I don&#8217;t know.&#8221;<br \/>\nRuiz zoomed closer.<br \/>\nInside the rectangle, Eli had drawn three crooked white lines.<br \/>\nClara leaned toward the screen.<br \/>\n&#8220;Could be a window.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Underground room wouldn&#8217;t have one,&#8221; I said.<br \/>\n&#8220;Not necessarily.&#8221;<br \/>\nRuiz stared at it.<br \/>\nThen her phone buzzed.<br \/>\nA message.<br \/>\nShe opened it.<br \/>\nA photograph appeared.<br \/>\nAn officer had taken it behind the Harris residence.<br \/>\nIt showed a detached wooden workshop at the far end of the property.<br \/>\nPaint peeling.<br \/>\nWindows covered.<br \/>\nLarge padlock on the door.<br \/>\nAnd beside it\u2014<br \/>\nA green storm-cellar hatch built into the ground.<br \/>\nThree white scratches crossed the metal.<br \/>\nExactly like Eli&#8217;s drawing.<br \/>\n&#8220;That&#8217;s it,&#8221; I whispered.<br \/>\nRuiz was already calling.<br \/>\n&#8220;Do not enter until backup arrives.
