In the meantime, on the red carpet, the mother-of-one reflected on her supposedly humble beginnings after being asked if and how her life reflected that of the American people.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1999505\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m an immigrant, I\u2019m coming from a different country,\u201d Melania told USA TODAY. \u201cIt\u2019s incredible \u2013 you will see some of it in the movie. I will talk about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very proud to be an American citizen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-256218 td-animation-stack-type0-2\" src=\"https:\/\/bunny-wp-pullzone-qbwibhia54.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-31-113948.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"616\" height=\"402\" \/><\/p>\n<h1><strong>Melania\u2019s \u2018immigrant story\u2019<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>As a reminder, president Trump\u2019s third wife was born in the Balkan country of Slovenia, moving from Europe to the US in August 1996 to pursue modelling.<\/p>\n<p>Melania arrived on a B\u20111\/B\u20112 visitor visa, which does not permit tourists to work in exchange for payment. A total of eight people have been killed in 2026 alone in dealings with ICE, the Guardian reports.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>\u2018A complete disconnect\u2019<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Understandably, Melania\u2019s remarks haven\u2019t gone down too well with a number of critics of the current regime, with some pointing out an inconsistency in the treatment of Melania\u2019s story, compared to that of other immigrants.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-256220 td-animation-stack-type0-2\" src=\"https:\/\/bunny-wp-pullzone-qbwibhia54.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-31-114042.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"401\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo her immigrant story is worth glorifying but millions others are not? Smh,\u201d one Instagram user hit out following Melania\u2019s latest remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Another jibed: \u201cDid ICE check her documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe jokes write themselves,\u201d a third continued.<\/p>\n<p>A fourth went on to add: \u201cThe irony of this is just disgusting.
